Richard Hakluyt[edit]

Hello. I would like to answer your question at Author talk:Richard Hakluyt. We do not transcribe short extracts of books to Wikisource, we transcribe the whole works. Which edition of the book is the page from? I can help with uploading and creating the index page, and if you want, you can transcribe the book using our OCR tools then. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 19:25, 26 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I appreciate your help. The work is The principall navigations, voiages and discoveries of the English nation from 1589. But I'm not sure whether I manage to transcribe this whole book. --Rießler (talk) 08:07, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have found the book at https://archive.org/details/cihm_35668/page/n23/mode/2up . However, this book is not only very long, but also very difficult to transcribe for a novice contributor. If you want to try, I will upload the scan, but I strongly recommend to start with something easier. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 12:51, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! In this case I just transcribe this one page relevant for Kildin Sami in Multilingual Wikisource and skip English. Over there they seem to have different rules and this particular page is very important as a document for Sami research. --Rießler (talk) 13:59, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I have uploaded the book to Commons:File:The principall navigations, voiages, and discoveries of the English nations (1589).djvu, and here in Wikisource I have founded the index page, so you can proofread any pages you want. The page you are interested in is no. 329. Unfortunately I did not find a better copy than this one: the file is not a typical scan, it is a copy from a microform, and most scanned pages overlap to the neighbouring page, which in combination with unusual fonts results in very poor OCR results, and so I am afraid that manual transcription is the only possibility :-( --Jan Kameníček (talk) 19:37, 27 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! There are all together 4 pages about the Sami encounter, only the last one includes Kildin Sami language. I'll transcribe all four pages, but only one page will later be linked to the Kildin Sami category in Multilingual Wikisource. --Rießler (talk) 08:06, 28 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
