Reference data

This section groups discussions related to the recent decision to exclude reference data. As described by the general phase-out plan, there is no question that these will be deleted. They are listed here in order to decide what to do with the content: delete, transwiki, submit to another website, et cetera. Those listed here will also be orphaned on Wikisource and other projects. // 05:02, 13 May 2006 (UTC)

Articles under Category:Deletion requests/Reference data

Pathoschild deleted the reference data articles that were posted, but there are still many in the category. I propose that since there are so many articles, that this be used mainly to argue for any articles that should be kept. If anyone knows how to get a link to the category here, please add it. - illy 16:38, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

You can link to the category by prepending a colon ([[:Category:blah]]). The category groups reference data while we slowly phase them out; for discussion concerning the phase-out plan, see "Plan on phasing out reference data" (Scriptorium archives, May 2006). The plan identifies three steps each reference data page goes through: tagging with {{refdata}}, removal of incoming links, and deletion. After Wikibooks users began moving pages to Wikibooks, we integrated the use of {{soft redirect}} for pages moved elsewhere. Each page in the category will be listed here, about twenty at a time, and brought through this process. At the current rate, all pages will be deleted or moved in 3 months less one day (11.9 weeks). // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 17:32, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
On second thought, it should take much less time than that; many of the pages in the category belong to a larger work, such as Openstar below. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 17:43, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
Sounds good. I just wanted to make sure the process was still moving. And thanks for the info on linking the categories. - illy 18:10, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Anglo-Saxon and Old Norse Poems

This is more a (partial) collection of various anonymous texts with an exceeding amount of editor-contributed "meta-material" than any actual source text. Most of the poems here can be found in other sources. This is redundant material.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 01:14, 18 May 2006 (UTC)

  • Archived. This category doesn't exist, and category redirects do not function as expected: visitors to the redirect page will be redirected, but pages accidentally categorised to the redirect category will not be redirected to the correct category. This results in a situation where pages categorised to the redirect category become lost outside the category tree, but users assume they are correctly categorised from the bluelink. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 16:28, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

Templates Chapter foot and Footer

{{chapter foot}} was previously queued for deletion (see "Templates Navigator, Navigation, NavigatorBegin, Chap, Chap simple, Chapter foot"), and only one standard footer template should be used. I propose that these be replaced by {{foot}}, which would be renamed to {{footer}}. I see three primary advantages to the new template:

  1. It requires much less duplication of effort, as it's not necessary to specify the navigation parameters twice on a page.
  2. Due to its simplicity, it could easily be added to the bottom of every long page without effort.
  3. It matches the navigation colour scheme used by the standardised {{header}}.

The template as it is at the time of this nomination follows.

Return to the top of the page.

// Pathoschild (admin / talk) 09:35, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

I agree Footer should be deleted but I'm not convinced that Chapter foot should be. I take your point that we don't need 2 navigation aids but having one at the bottom of the document is very useful & saves scrolling up or clicking the return to top link (which is useful on days like today when every second link I hit brings up an error message). It does matche the colour scheme of the header & I don't see that there would be a real benefit in replacing it with a return to top link. AllanHainey 11:06, 7 April 2006 (UTC)
Clicking the return-to-top link shouldn't cause an error, since it's entirely client-side. The main disadvantage to the current {{Chapter foot}} is that it requires duplication of effort to add, and doubles the amount of effort involved in maintaining or updating every page it's used on in cases of reorganisation or page renaming. The return-to-top link is quite instant, so it allows the same amount of convenience without requiring that editors duplicate efforts. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 11:13, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

  • Delete. We have no idea what the copyright for this work is, and since it's not showing up on the internet, it's likely Robert Cale is contemporary. This will likely place his work in some kind of copyright.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 01:06, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Rap, 2000-2009

The only non-redlink on the page Wikisource:Songs; the fact that I haven't been able to find the text on Google, apart from something on a 3D-gaming forum, and the date on it implies that it has been published very recently, so unless it's been released under the GFDL after being published, it's most likely still copyrighted. Hence, I propose it's deletion. Jude (talk, contribs, email) 02:45, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Book of Mormon/Bom nav and Book of Mormon/Jacob nav

These specific navigation templates are unused. I'm not sure whether they've been deprecated, or someone simply forgot to add them to the correct page. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 17:14, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Delete. I believe these templates are deprecated (look at the Jacob template--it has individual links to chapters of Jacob which have since been moved to one page). Also, with the header template, navigating a work is not very difficult to do, so TOC templates like this I think are not constructive.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 18:56, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Book of Mormon/Chapters

This is an unused specific navigation template. I'm not sure whether it's been deprecated, or someone just forgot to add it to the correct pages. These templates are no longer used on the Divine Comedy, and they really aren't needed anymore, either. Navigating around the Divine Comedy is greatly aided by the cross-linking in {{header}}.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 18:59, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Restore Peter Pan?

I deleted Peter Pan per the copyright violation discussion on the talk page, but BirgitteSB pointed out a related discussion in the archives after I deleted the work—which I closed as 'kept', oddly ("Peter Pan", Possibly copyright violations, May 2006). The copyright status for this work is highly ambiguous as described by Wikipedia's article Peter Pan, varying widely from region to region.

  • The work is public domain in Australia and Canada.
  • The copyright was retroactively extended until 2007 across the European Union, in some jurisdictions moving it back out of the public domain. A unique pseudo-copyright applies to the work in Britain, allowing them to collect royalties on any and all commercial action. This status does not include creative control or control of distribution. It will be public domain in the European Union after 2007, but (for Wikisource's purposes) noncommercial in Britain.
  • The copyright status in the United States is far more ambiguous. The copyright holder claims copyright until 2023 according to the Copyright Act of 1976 and the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act. This claim is disputed by various parties, but there is no legal precedent or court decision which settles the issue— a lawsuit filed against a US writer ambiguously settled out of court with a joint statement that the writer's use of the work was "fair use".

It is my opinion that hosting this work on Wikisource is a legal risk, particularly given at least one precendent for lawsuits on this matter. Thus, it should remain deleted. // [admin] Pathoschild (talk/map) 22:15, 11 June 2006 (UTC)

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you. The copyright situation is complicated at best. I don't know when Peter Pan was first published in the States, although it was published in England in 1911, so I would imagine that within the 11 years it had to get over here, it probably did. I don't get how the British exemption for the usual Life + 70 works here, and so I say just keep it deleted until rock solid proof pops up that guarantees the WMF is not at legal risk.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 13:12, 13 June 2006 (UTC)
