Your recent uploads[edit]

Hi Leibide,

I have posted our standard welcome message above, which contains some useful information and links, but I also have some concerns about your recent uploads.

First of all, neither of these have the appropriate {{book}} metadata templates, giving authorship, source, date of publication, etc. Further, none of them have a suitable licensing template to indicate their copyright status. There is also no indication of why they have been uploaded here instead of at Wikimedia Commons. And finally, none of them appear to be in English and are thus out of scope for English Wikisource.

Could you please address these issues? --Xover (talk) 14:35, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Leibide. You can edit this page to respond to messages: it is your user talk page, so all messages here are meant for you, and you are meant to respond to them. You can use either the "Edit" button at the top of the page, or the little "[edit]" link next to the section title ("Your recent uploads") to get into edit mode. You can then type your message into the text window, after my message here. At the bottom of the window there will be a big blue "Publish" button, and when you press that your message will be saved here so that I can see it. Once we have a dialogue going we can figure out the rest. --Xover (talk) 18:25, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Irish Gaelic translation on English Wikisource[edit]

Hello, thank you for your advice. I am sorry I did not publish my contribution properly. It is a Gaelic translation of Dubliners by James Joyce. Therefore, I had intended to publish it on the 'Gaeilge' Wikisource. It does not belong on the English Wikisource. I followed the links for 'help' and how to publish on the Gaelic Wikisource, and it seems it linked me to the English Wikisource. Is it possible to move it to the 'Gaeilge' Wikisource (i.e. Irish Gaelic - language code ga)? If not, could you please delete all previous attempts and give me the correct link for where to publish it? There is no copyright issue: Dubliners was published in 1914 and James Joyce died in 1941. I wanted to include two different translation attempts - one in contemporary Gaelic and one in modern Gaelic but with some archaisms.

This is where I went to create the Irish Gaelic tranlation: https://wikisource.org/wiki/Category:Gaeilge This is what I got when I selected 'upload file': https://wikisource.org/wiki/Special:Upload I believe I specified 'ga' for the language when editing the page before publishing. I do not understand how it ended up being published on English Wikisource.

I see here that it would have been preferable to upload to Wikimedia Commons instead of Wikisource. I am happy to upload here instead if that is preferable - https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Irish_language, which links to this: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:UploadWizard Leibide (talk) 20:29, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Leibide (talk) 19:43, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Leibide. Thanks for your reply.
Now I understand what's going on, and don't worry about it. This stuff all kind of makes sense when you've gotten used to it, but for a new user I imagine it must seem almost wilfully obtuse. I could give you a quick intro to the technical bits, but I suspect that would only be more confusing just now (but do feel free to ask if there's anything you want more information on!).
The one thing I think might be important to begin with is that Wikisource is not really a file hosting service. We have a facility for uploading files so that we can have scans of original works for reference, and possibly images if the original had plates or illustrations, but our core purpose is to transcribe the text into wikipages (i.e. like this talk page). We call the process "Proofreading" and it involves both transcribing the text and adding wiki-native formatting to mimic the original publication. Original (not previously published) translation are somewhat of a special case; but we still generally want these to be in wiki format, not as an uploaded PDF file.
Just to give you an example for reference, we recently had a contribution of an original translation from Polish to English of a work by Bolesław Prus. You can see the (almost) finished translation in the wikipage On Discoveries and Inventions. It was produced by uploading a scan of the Polish original, that was then "Proofread" and translated page by page into wikipages (you can see the overview for the project here). It is likely that something similar (not necessarily exactly the same, see below) will be necessary for your project too.
In any case, Gaelic is one of the languages that have too few active users to merit their very own wiki (i.e. like you'll find French Wikisource at fr.wikisource.org and German Wikisource at de.wikisource.org), and those languages are collected at what we call Multilingual Wikisource. I mainly work here on English Wikisource so I am not immediately familiar with how they organise this on the Multilingual project. I'll look into it and try to either point you in the right direction or find you someone who can better advice you.
In the mean time, feel free to ask here if you have any questions. If you include the code {{ping|xover}} in your message I will get a notification (similar to what you see when someone leaves a message on your talk page). I mostly work here on English Wikisource, but I should also be able to answer any general questions about wikis. --Xover (talk) 20:33, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your help. It makes sense to me that it would be preferable in wiki format than in PDF format. Indeed, I would prefer to publish it in wiki format. If I’ve understood correctly from the help pages, the end format is djvu. I’ll wait until I hear more from you about where to start on Multilingual Wikisource. I see that a correctly edited English version of James Joyce’s Dubliners already exists on Wikisource.

Once I find where to go, I’m happy to scan my two different translations of the same work as PDF files and then proofread each for publishing them online myself, or indeed to scan them directly as djvu files if this is preferable. @Xover:

Hi Leibide. Thank you for pinging me, and my apologies for the delay: I had trouble finding the relevant information and then completely dropped the ball on this. I still haven't figured out what the correct path forward is here, but I have now asked for help from someone who has more experience with the Multilingual Wikisource project than I do. Please do not be disheartened that this is taking so long: most of that delay was due to my failure to follow this up properly, and the rest due to my lack of familiarity with the multilingual project. Once we eventually clear those hurdles the pace should be more up to you.
In the mean time, I recommend you read up on the help page for talk pages over on English Wikipedia: w:Help:Talk pages. We sadly do not have a version that documentation here on Wikisource, but most of the principles carry over to all the sister projects here. In any case, you'll soon notice that mastering talk pages is crucial for both working and getting assistance on wiki-based projects, so it'll be a smart thing to read up on.
PS. Please do not hesitate to ping me if you need help or if you think I've forgotten about something again! --Xover (talk) 16:41, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Files in which you are the only editor[edit]

Hi Leibide,

Please, copy-paste this: {{delete|author's request}} into the pages you ask us to delete, so that we can do it.

We will be able to discuss then on the scriptorium about how to handle these translations. @Xover:, do you agree? @Yann:, can you help us?

Lots of thanks to all of you! --Zyephyrus (talk) 18:01, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Zyephyrus: Deleting the local files here on English Wikisource isn't really a problem (they are speediable under G5). The issue is figuring out how we can help Leibide add their translation on Multilingual Wikisource the right way. I am not familiar with how things are done on Multilingual Wikisource so I have been precious little help to them so far. --Xover (talk) 20:49, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Is there an other template, if not {{delete|author's request}} so that we can know that the author asked for the deleting of the text? --Zyephyrus (talk) 07:47, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Zyephyrus: Again, I can delete the files here just fine. The files here are not a problem. What I am seeking assistance with is setting up a translation project for Leibide over on mul:Category:Gaeilge somewhere. If you are uncertain how best to do that I can certainly ask on mul:Wikisource:Scriptorium, but since not many people watch that page I thought I'd try to approach you directly here instead. --Xover (talk) 09:26, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough, Zyephrus, if you can easily delete those three files, then I’ll leave it to you. If it helps that I add {{delete|author's request}} to each, then I’m glad to do that. Do I have to add this to each page? So far I’ve just added it to the title page of Muintir Duibhlinne3. I’ll read up on wiki/Help:Talk_pages as well. Thank you for the feedback. @Xover:

Don't worry about the files or the templates here. I had just explained my request for assistance poorly so Zyephyrus thought I needed help dealing with the files you had uploaded. We can clean those up later, so no need to worry about those. I am still trying to find someone that can help you get set up properly on the Multilingual Wikisource and will get back to you as soon as I find someone. --Xover (talk) 18:58, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Getting started on Multilingual Wikisource[edit]

Hi Leibide,

Good news: I asked Jon Harald Søby for assistance, and they have offered to help you get started with this project over on Multilingual Wikisource. Based on their explanation it looks like it will be a little bit of an innovative one, since this particular kind of translation isn't one we have very many of, but Jon Harald is both a very experienced wiki user and an administrator on the Multilingual Wikisource so he will be able to figure it out.

That means we should now migrate our discussions from here (your user talk page on the English Wikisource) to the equivalent page on the Multilingual Wikisource: mul:User talk:Leibide. I will try to continue monitoring the discussion there in case I'm needed, but will otherwise leave it up to Jon Harald who knows their way around that project.

In a little while I will post a message on your user talk page on Multilingual Wikisource with some initial information to get things started, and from then on you should generally carry on the conversation there rather than here in order to keep all messages in the same place. --Xover (talk) 07:07, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've read the page you wrote up on Multilingual Wikisource and it is clear and well written. I've got all I need now I think to go about this. I will be inactive until mid-November though. Many thanks for all your help. Leibide (talk) 18:17, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
