1860 edition[edit]

This is the 1860 edition from the scan at [1]. There are other scans of this edition, but they are missing the frontispiece or other pages.

Note that there are multiple editions of Leaves of Grass, and these editions differ significantly from one another. There were only 12 poems in the first edition (1855) but 400 poems in the last edition of Whitman's lifetime. As such, the 1860 edition should not replace any existing copy on Wikisource, but should be assembled in its own location. Once this edition (or any edition) is complete on Wikisource, then we can see about setting up a versions page. Right now, we have no complete scan-backed editions. --EncycloPetey (talk) 23:48, 27 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Uniformity concerning line numbers, breaks etc[edit]

i see some are using colon, and some are using template:gap to indent around left line numbers. there is also table code. what is the consensus ? Slowking4SvG's revenge 19:13, 3 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Also template:pline (e.g. page 72).

Same question for line breaks, compare page 6 and page 72. --Dick Bos (talk) 06:32, 17 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion, for this poetic text a line break would look better and make it more readable. I'd vote for the formatting as given on page 72. --Esga84 (talk) 18:10, 20 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I would also vote for the formatting on page 72. 4yehhop (talk) 10:37, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Just looking at this now, it seems these formatting suggestions for the pline tags and using a colon for indents does not seem consistent with recent pages. Can I get some guidance on this before I try to help with this Slowking4, Dick Bos, Esga84, and 4yehhop? --- FULBERT (talk) 15:03, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
i tend to to use template:gap not {{:}}  ; better control of indent spacing. i also use <br> and template:hi , rather than <poem> (for example [2]) - replicating the long lines regardless of where the poet wanted a line break, regardless of zoom does not add value to me. but yrmv. see also [3] and [4] cheers Slowking4Rama's revenge 15:22, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Slowking4. What do you use for those initial section numbers? Asking as I see various approaches to how this has been done, and wonder if this inconsistency with these steps across this one book is something that is ok on its own or if those inconsistencies should also be cleaned? --- FULBERT (talk) 15:45, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
normally i use a template:larger with a center, to get the relative scale to body text. the section figures, i would normally ignore, but apparently people want to include them as images. small value for me Slowking4Rama's revenge 15:50, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Uniformity with punctuation[edit]

Should there be a space before an semi-colon/exclamation/question mark in the text? Compare the formatting on pages page 270 and page 271. 4yehhop (talk) 10:45, 4 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@4yehhop: Those spaces should be removed. Londonjackbooks (talk) 17:37, 27 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Indents[edit]

How should the indents be formatted? I've been using <poem> and two colons. Should we use {{hanging indent}} instead? Ultimateria (talk) 23:52, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oops, I see the answer above. But I still wonder about that template. Ultimateria (talk) 23:54, 4 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
i agree, but can't force people to use it. i.e. [5] Slowking4Rama's revenge 15:54, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Line breaks[edit]

I just did my first page review, though it seems some of the line breaks did not remain, though when I followed some pages that were already reviewed I did not see any specific codes for them. Can anybody offer suggestions why some of my line breaks on this page not remain? Thanks. --- FULBERT (talk) 18:14, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@FULBERT: MediaWiki (the software that runs this wiki) and HTML (what the page is converted into for display in your web browser) ignores single line breaks. In order to preserve line breaks in poetry or similar you need to use either <br /> (a forced hard line break) or wrap the entire run in <poem></poem> tags. --Xover (talk) 09:29, 18 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Heading - Numbers[edit]

In this book heading numbers are written in artistic way, can we place image of those numbers in same artistic pattern? --Sushant savla (talk) 12:54, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
