On Righteousness

[edit]

Hello. Thanks very much for contributing here! May I just ask for the source of the text by Epiphanes that you have added to On Righteousness? The original is of course public domain, but it is necessary to check that the English translation is also not copyrighted. Thanks! -- Jan Kameníček (talk) 10:08, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Jan.Kamenicek: Here. Des Vallee (talk) 10:12, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Likewise this source contains an inline citation, with a PHD in political philosophy. Des Vallee (talk) 10:25, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I see, thanks. Unfortunately, the source has no information about the copyright licence of the translation. What I only can see there is the message on the left side of http://gnosis.org/welcome.html where they claim all their original content copyrighted, but we do not know, if the translation is their original content (most probably not) or if they simply copied it from elsewhere. For this reason I asked other contributors to consider it at Wikisource:Copyright discussions#On Righteousness and we will see the result. You are also welcome to write your opinion there. Only after I founded that copyright discussion I noticed your second answer with the link to The Genetics of Political Behavior. Unfortunately, the book has restricted access and I can see only some parts as a preview, so I failed to find there anything about our text.
I do hope that if the result of the copyright discussion is negative (hopefully not), it will not discourage you from further contributions, there are enormous amounts of other, copyright-free texts, which need to be added here too :-) Thanks for understanding. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 10:43, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Jan.Kamenicek: It's fine, I think the license is under CC and I am currently looking for a license, but if it is not what are the guide-lines of personal translation, and what about a machine translation. That is to state if I were to find the original Greek text and translated it myself would that be allowed. Many thanks. Des Vallee (talk) 10:52, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
The text is on page 110 of the academia link following the section stating the The Gnostics saw divinity in all things (then quote). The citation for the quote is just Op. Cit. Des Vallee (talk) 11:07, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Ok so I found this, if I can't establish that the translation is licensed under CC, I will find the original Greek text and translate it. I will likewise on the talk page give a reasoned explanation of the translation of the Greek words, I study physics not linguistics but hopefully I will be able to translate it correctly and give a detailed explanation of a translation. As you have meanwhile found out, Wikisource original translations are possible, but they are quite challenging for an unexperienced user. A fellow contributor has recently described the process at WS:Scriptorium/Help#Original translation, which I recommend to read. Of course, I or other contributors can help with technical difficulties in any phase of the process if needed. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 11:25, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
