Re: Your floating image template comment[edit]

Hi. I saw your comment on my reversion of the image template on this page. The idea of eliminating the paragraph break is very good, except the template lacks the versatility required by the variety of layouts and captions of the PSm project. Regarding this particular page, I believe the image size and the caption was the issue. {{Img float}} also notes some exceptions, which render it unusable for many images in PSM.

Furthermore, Inductiveload who designed the template, hasn't been around for the past month, and there is no one who has the time to study and modify the template to make it suitable under all our circumstances.

Even as I write this, User:Mpaa and I are striving hard to standardize the PSM project elements, and trying to convince others to follow one format throughout the project.

On a separate note, about the images themselves, we are aware that some of the early images have poor contrast and we are replacing them when time permits. We mark the page by placing the {{PSMImages}} tag in the header so it doesn't show up in the main namespace. Your replacement image here, is full of grey blotches and will also have to be replaced. — Ineuw talk 22:01, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for replying! I think some of those images should be edited from the original scan and not from edited version as I did. I didn't notice before but now that you said I see there is some grey stuff. I have some experience with templates, css and html so maybe I can help with img float template to better suit your need if you can specify what is needed. Thanks for your offer, and please go for it. This template issue is only relevant for images that on the left or right of the page. Also feel free to create a new template since we should refrain from modifying originals. (At least, that's my approach).
1. The major issue is the mix of small caps, regular, and italics.
2. Captions are always 85%.
3. If two lines or less, it's centered.
4. If over 2 lines it's justified, with a hanging indent.
This is the original publisher's approach, to which they adhered to in the first 50 volumes. (I haven't proceeded proofreading any further.
As for image quality, my initial work was often poor because this is my first foray into graphics and graphics software. I often replace or mark for later replacement with the template. I use the downloaded .JP2 file of the volume from Internet archive. There is an explanation of the process Science_Monthly_illustrations here.
For individual images' replacement, I magnify the online page to the extreme and then copy and paste into Irfanview, which is a great image batch processor.
