Commentary Wiki
It would be amazing to have a commentary wiki. Not sure how to set it up or who to contact about it. unsigned comment by 192.104.67.222 (talk) .

Author:Thomas Edison[edit]

Why is it "Author:Thomas Edison" when he is not the author of any of the works listed? Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 00:13, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

It is in the section "Works about Edison" — billinghurst sDrewth 02:01, 9 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
What does "It is in the section 'Works about Edison' " actually mean?
Does every author gets a subject page, even when we have no works by them stored? How do we determine who is an author and who isn't if we have no works by them? You just wrote on my talk page that subject pages MUST be moved to user space. Can you explain the inconsistency. Can you also explain why we have a page for "Works about Edison" in main space but you just moved "Works about Susannah Lattin" to my user space.

Better cite this page output[edit]

It would be nice if the DNB pages and many other sources produce citation templates filled in with more accurate information (entered in through a suitable hidden template perhaps) on the authors, page numbers, publisher and so on instead of giving such output as "Author: Wikisource contributors" and "Publisher: Wikisource" Shyamal (talk) 08:40, 1 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Help finding full texts that need to be proofread[edit]

Hello, I would like to help with first draft proofreading, specifically of poetry, however I have been looking pretty hard to try and find an easy way to figure out which works we have scanned text from but still need a human to proofread. So far my best method has been to click "random transcription" 100 times hoping something interesting comes up or going to the poetry category and clicking on every single work waiting for one that needs proofreading to come up. Neither option has allowed to me make any progress. If there is an easy way I would appreciate the help so I can help! Thanks. Adorabutton (talk) 13:21, 8 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Adorabutton: Two points of note:
  1. Hardly anybody really reads/responds in this area. You might do better posting your request in either WS:S or (perhaps even better) WS:H.
  2. If these are in fact your interests, you might try checking Special:IndexPages for non-green entries containing "poem". Entries there which contain any significant proportion of pink may truly be considered "first drafts".
Hope either of these items helps. AuFCL (talk) 13:35, 8 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Adorabutton:, another possible avenue is to use Category:Index Not-Proofread to pick up texts that have been uploaded, but are yet to have the first pass completed. Those waiting for the second pass are in Category:Index Proofread. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 20:08, 8 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for both of the responses, they are very helpful & sorry for posting in the wrong spot. Adorabutton (talk) 19:08, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

"Improve and Maintain" section[edit]

I think it would be in the interest of Wikisource to provide a current list of "Improve and Maintain" options for editors, derived from current maintenance categories. I've brought this up at Wikisource talk:Community portal/Improve and maintain, but the currently suggested pages for "Improve and Maintain" cannot be edited there. They are three years old. So they're coming from somewhere else.

The Box code for this section on this page is

{{Box-header | title = Improve and maintain | editpage = {{SUBJECTSPACE}}:{{BASEPAGENAME}}/Improve and maintain | viewpage = {{SUBJECTSPACE}}:{{BASEPAGENAME}}/Improve and maintain | border = #CCC | titleforeground = black | titlebackground = #CCC | background = white | foreground = black }} {{/Improve and maintain}} {{Box-footer | [[:Category:Wikisource maintenance|See all maintenance activities]] }}

which, frankly, I only partially understand. What is {{SUBJECTSPACE}}:{{BASEPAGENAME}}?

This section of the Community Portal should be guiding editors to appropriate Index files (preferably with proofreading guidelines on the talk page) for them to work on. It's not doing that. What's the problem here? Outlier59 (talk) 00:58, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone know this poem?[edit]

Not sure about poem title or Author. I remember a single line from it and have been searching for the poem for a long time. the line reads "Reach me, Teach me, and I will learn." Can anybody help me out with this one?

Download the completed books[edit]

Hi, is there any feature to download the validated books in English wikisource?

In my local community, I have a friend who holds a doctorate degree in English Literature. He wants to read a wider range of books, but he is visually challenged. Since the books in Braille language are limited in our locality, he uses a software which would read out the digital content.

He can read the wikisource pages directly using the software, however it would read out the entire page including menus and headers. It would be easier for him if these books are available in word/pdf/epub format, as he need not have to navigate the webpages, which would be complicated for him. Can you please help me regd. this? --Cyarenkatnikh (talk) 13:44, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I could see download option for the featured text displayed in homepage. How can i get a similar option for other books? --Cyarenkatnikh (talk) 14:43, 29 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I just uploaded the GAO report on the Withholding of Ukraine Security Assistance by the Office of Management and Budget [1] and copy-pasted the text out of the pdf. I have to get ready for class, and I would like to put this important document in the care of the community for the next few hours. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 22:25, 21 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello all- I have made a lot of edits on the Withholding of Ukraine Security Assistance document and I invite everyone to come and do some more work on it. After reading it over, I am somewhat convinced that this is an extremely important document that needs to be well curated and cared for by this community. I have linked the Wikisource page on the 'Trump–Ukraine scandal' page on Wikipedia. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 10:41, 22 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
