Forbidden characters[edit]

It would be good to know what charters aren't permitted in titles at the outset, rather than creating a superfluous file on Commons and then having to do everything again. Is the list of the banned characters somewhere? Leutha (talk) 15:12, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I can't load the page on to commons with a more suitable title, as Commons prevents me from doing this. All I can really do is feel frustrated and give up.Leutha (talk) 15:16, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What characters are these? What was the context? The only ones I can imagine are the usual characters reserved by computers for specific functions (eg. slashes and dots). That would probably have been blocked by Commons too, and possibly your own computer's operating system. As to the problem itself, Commons have a file renaming procedure, if that will help. - AdamBMorgan (talk) 19:20, 26 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is the file in question this one: Commons:File:Tudorschoolboyl01vivegoog.djvu Tudor School-Boy Life: The Dialogues of Juan Luis Vives? There shouldn't any problem with the title (e.g. Tudor School-Boy Life). That djvu seems incomplete, though (and still has the Google coverpage). — Sam Wilson ( TalkContribs ) … 01:37, 27 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I am sorry I can't remember what the character was, but the file was the Tudor Schoolboy File as mentioned above, which somehow produced a message saying one of the characters was not permitted. I have since changed the name on the file on my computer. But thanks for putting the new file up and giving it a more suitable name. Perhaps the instructions need a bit of guidance about naming files. Leutha (talk) 04:04, 10 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As a note, one cannot use a colon in the file name at Commons, and that is often the case with "title: subtitle" works. I have yet to trip over a prohibited character at this end, just some uglies when they are in a url. — billinghurst sDrewth 04:00, 18 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Book template and Index gadget[edit]

We should add some text about

  • preference to utilise {{book}} at Commons
  • the ability to populate the Index: files with {{book}} data using the gadget
