Index:Address Delivered by Joseph N. Teal.djvu[edit]

Hi. There are three images in the work "Address Delivered by Joseph N. Teal.djvu". Should they be transcluded with the work, or are they separate from the narrative? Or is the index component presented bigger than the article? — billinghurst sDrewth 07:17, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Billinghurst:, I hope you don't mind that I moved your comment here. Good question; I think there is sort of a philosophical question behind it. Is what we are presenting (a) a transcript or draft of the address, or is it (b) the published version of the address (from the Oregon Historical Quarterly)? I treated it as (b), and so I included the photo of the sculpture that was being dedicated in the address, and the photos of the speaker and of the sculptor, reproducing the presentation from the OHQ. But perhaps others would choose differently. I think it's better this way, as it doesn't add much to the length, and readers may be interested to see the full presentation as intended by the OHQ. But I don't feel too strongly about it. -Pete (talk) 07:24, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Peteforsyth: My question is coming from a different direction, something more mechanical. More checking indexes to ensure that we have the pages that should be transcluded to be transcluded, or marked not to be transcluded. Part of the local philosophy is also to be true to the published medium, which in this case is the edition of the Oregon Historical Quarterly of which we would normally have such an address as a subpart of the journal edition (published medium), and have a redirect from the root to the subpage. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:27, 19 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Billinghurst: Ah, I understand. And I tracked down a full scan of Vol. 20, which I've now uploaded. I'll transfer this (and the other transcription I've done from Vol. 20) into the new Index: file and let you know. Thanks for the question...glad to find that the Internet Archive has many early volumes of OHQ...I'm not sure how I missed this before! -Pete (talk) 00:26, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
OK @Billinghurst: I think I have addressed your concern in the index file now. I will propose the existing index file for deletion. However, a technical question: Is there a way to bulk-import the pages from Index:History of Willamette Railroad.djvu into this index? This is the sequence of pages that should begin around page 139 of the new index file. I brought in the first couple manually, but stopped in case there is a bot or script that could handle this more efficiently. -Pete (talk) 01:09, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done Duplicate index now deleted, per uploader request. --EncycloPetey (talk) 05:03, 20 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for understanding the larger scope thinking, appreciate that. Usually the way that I move a large group of Page: namespace pages is to create a false root page, then as admin I move it with subpages, and then delete the false root page. There isn't really a pretty way. <shrug> — billinghurst sDrewth 01:16, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, sounds like a neat trick @Billinghurst:. But I don't understand, how do you create a "false root page"? If the other pages don't have a slash anywhere in their title, how can you make them subpages of something without moving them first? (Asking more, at this point, out of curiosity about MW hackery, than out of specific need...this is a relatively small number of pages.) -Pete (talk) 06:36, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
But they do have a slash Page:whatever.djvu/1, /2, ... /n. So you create Page:whatever.djvu — as it doesn't interfere with Index:whatever.djvu — and move the pages, where there are more than 100 pages, you can move it back, and do the next set, and so on. The advantage here is that no redirects need to be created (as long as one remembers to click off that checkbox). — billinghurst sDrewth 06:43, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, OK..I feel just a little silly for overlooking that, @Billinghurst:. Thanks for explaining though, cool trick. -Pete (talk) 20:28, 21 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And...it seems like I could do that without the bit, and then just request deletion after moving...couldn't I? -20:30, 21 July 2016 (UTC)
@Peteforsyth: if there are not many then you can move and we will clean up the redirects as necessary, if there are a lot, then please place a request at WS:AN asking for someone to do, multiple deletions can be a PITA. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:34, 22 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Billinghurst: About 18 pages, not sure if that's too many or not. I was about to do it myself, but I realized I'm not sure to reassign the numbering during the move. (Page number 1 from the existing index should be page 147 of the new index.) -Pete (talk) 06:01, 23 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
