Hi, I blocked quickly as soon as I noticed it running, but kept the block short as I wasnt sure what was going on, and its edits looked reasonable at first glance. I then asked lar to take a look. He agreed with an infinite block but suggested it stay as it was while he investigated. lar did get back to me, but I forgot to reblock. I have now done that. Volapük cleanup proposal

[edit]

Hi BirgitteSB, thanks for your enlightening comment in the discussion of the m:Proposals for closing projects/Radical cleanup of Volapük Wikipedia. For the time being, the opposers of the proposal seem to be winning, but the difference is small, so I wondered: should the supporters win the vote, can their plan be carried out? If, as you said, there are strong objections against this proposal from WMF principles (free as in freedom, etc.) and if it sets a dangerous precedent (cf. the Polish wikipedia cleanup fiasco), would a "yes" result be executed, or would it be stopped on the grounds that you mentioned? Thanks in advance! --83.85.142.49 11:18, 29 December 2007 (UTC) --Smeira 11:39, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

User:BirgitteSB/Page Moves

[edit]

Greetings again. I was looking at User:BirgitteSB/Page Moves, and I'm not clear on what needs to be done. I write botscripts at the English Wikipedia, and if these are the sort of repetitive tasks that a bot can do, I could help out. But what needs to be moved, to where, and why? Bot flag request for User:Computer

[edit]
  • Bot operator: User:White Cat (Commons:User:White Cat) - En-N, Tr-4, Ja-1
  • List of botflags on other projects: Bot has a flag on wikimedia (meta, commons) wikipedia (ar, az, de, en, es, et, fr, is, ja, ku, nn, no, ru, sr, tr, uz, simple...) (See: m:User:White Cat#Bots)
  • Purpose: Interwiki linking, double redirect fixing, commons delinking (for cases where commonsdelinker fails)

-- Cat chi? 18:21, 16 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

see WS:BOT#Community_authorisation; requests for bot flag should be made at WS:S to allow community discussion. fwiw, I would prefer interwiki linkages to be visible on recentchanges, we dont have major problems with Special:DoubleRedirects (and most of those a best fixed by the person who was working on those pages), and I flat out definitely do not want to see another bot doing commons delinking here. Wikisource as a whole

[edit]

Hi, this is being very stressful for me. It is either because people treat me like the enemy or something I don't quite get.

I noticed you got involved with the -jkb- situation. I was considering abandoning all wikisource as it seems like I wont be allowed to contribute anyways. Since I made an enemy out of -jkb- everybody on all languages of Wikisource will hate me making my already difficult job unbearable. They show complete apathy towards the challenges I put on myself to serve them. I do not expect them to greet me with open arms. I also do not want them to greet me with torches and pitchforks.

I would prefer to avoid all that. You seem to understand what I am trying to do and was wondering if you could relay it properly. There is much for me to learn as I experienced with the bible issue and as we discussed it on IRC. There is also a very serious lack of interwiki link discipline. Many wikis link to the wrong page or even namespace.

In addition to seeking bot flags, I make an effort to standardize certain key policies on all wikis. These policies are policies that concerns non-regulars as much as regulars: usernames (imperative for SUL), username rename, usurption, bot flags. While on occasions I was treated unpleasantly in the past for suggesting a change I never ever faced this kind of treatment. I am not even asking anything remotely controversial.

cs.wikisource feels like a wiki one should not step into due to its hostile and unforgiving nature. I do not expect to be ever allowed to edit there. I do not know if you could change that at all.

-- Cat chi? 04:00, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi. my notice is [here], -jkb- (cs.source) 08:48, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
White Cat do you remember my involvement in the non-latin usernames at en.WP? For two months my contributions at en.WP have to do with nothing except that one specific issue. That was a very stressful experience and I even expected things to go somewhat slowly. You are trying to do many thing at once and move much more quickly than I did on that issue. And you do not even understand why your actions are controversial. I will try to help you understand the issues better and help others better understand you. But first you need to slow down. Walk away from this for a day and try no to even read about it. I am going to be very busy at work today so I will try and post a few things tonight or tommorrow.--BirgitteSB 12:11, 21 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Wikisource as a whole

[edit]

Can you detail for me what your goals are in regard to Wikisource as a whole? You have said general things such as you want to help, or standardize policy. But what specific things do you wish to achieve? --BirgitteSB 18:48, 22 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry for the late response. I have been busy IRL.
I wouldn't call it a goal... I feel it would be better for all wikimedia projects (not just wikisource) to have a standard on issues concerning interwiki. Of course each wiki will have its own flavor. But for example policy and issues concerning usernames in general, policy and issues concerning bots in general are issues best to have an interwiki standard. Local policy should be as restrictive or freer than this standard.
Consider the case of en.wikipedia policy banning non-latin charred usernames for example. Imagine how useless SUL would be... A user from Japanese wikipedia or any other non-latin charactered wiki would not be able to edit en.wikipedia had the username policy were not standardized. This is a mere example why such changes are particularly helpful. There is no reason to have a rule, polic or guideline for the sake of having one.
Like all volunteer projects I expect neither pay nor services for my contribution. It wouldn't be voluntary otherwise... :) As for spesific tasks I want to take care of, I would like to operate my bot for three major tasks.
  • Double redirects: I wish to take care of double redirects on all wikis operated by the foundation. This is a mindless task redirect.py can easily handle. One does not need to pay any attention while the bot processes this task. Despite this I frequently check what the bot is up to. This way I report redirect loops (redirects that form an infinite redirect loop with no end point) to the admins on local wikis.
  • Interwiki linking: This is also a mindless task for the most part yet interwiki links seems to be a complicated problem. This is not a technical problem but instead a cultural problem seemingly unique to wikibooks and wikisource alike. From what I can tell people are unsure how to use interwiki links. Since you know the problem so well, I wont bore you off with the details. The solution to this problem should be agreed on an interwiki level. This standardized consensus will need to be applied by an interwiki bot approved by each and every community. This is the function I hope to fulfill.
  • Commons delinking: When the toolserv dies, commons delinker dies. Us in commons have issues without commonsdelinker. You see when a commons administrator decides to delete an image officially he or she is neither expected nor required to remove every instance that image is used. But unofficially commons admins are expected not delete heavy use images unless there is a delinker bot ready to delink. It is very poor publicity to have zillions of red linked image links infesting a wiki. They will easily get out of control if left unattended. It is very difficult for a human to find and remove an image on tens or hundereds of wikis of which a good number has a special character set. It is not fun to hunt for a phrase among millions of "?"'s. Because the services of the bot is this vital, I decided to request permission to handle this task for cases where commonsdelinker becomes inoperable. I have no intention of running this function unless commons delinker dies.
  • I would be more than happy to deal with additional tasks.
Smaller wikis like wikisource do not need a whole lot of bot work. I am sure a human or twenty can handle these tasks manually but I feel rather than dealing with a task a mindless bot can handle, such people are better of working on something else. A bot cannot write articles for example.
I guess my ultimate goal is to take care of as many tasks from the hands of 'humans' so they have more time working on something else where bots cannot venture in. It is a waste to use human power for tasks cpu power can handle.
-- Cat chi? 15:05, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Oh I answered you on this before... :) -- Cat chi? 15:06, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Personally I find standardizing bot policies more similar to standardizing admin policies than username policies. I have lost my train of thinking on this from March. I'm not sure where you replied earlier but I never saw it. I am honestly having trouble remembering how I thought I could be helpful to you at the time. Because reading what you say above; I largely disagree with you that any of this is important enough to demand the attention needed to alter bot policies. While I think there are issues that should be eventually standardized (very basic things you have not listed). The issues you are interested in seem either trivial (bot naming when the programing easily allows for differing names) or actually problamatic to me (bot interwikis). I am sorry but I am seeing very little I can support in what you are looking to do. I suppose I expected you would have more of a compromise position after the difficulty you encountered with this at first.--BirgitteSB 19:29, 7 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Archiving

[edit]

We may want to have a consistent method for archiving documented somewhere; since we've done it recently, this seems like a reasonable place to discuss it, but feel free to move the thread.

Generally, I've created an archive at the end of the next month; i.e. in the last week of July, move everything that hadn't been discussed in 3 weeks to the June archive, so the names line up with the timestamps. Although It's pretty much automated now, I was thinking to run it a few more times or maybe get some feedback before letting it go completely unsupervised; but unless we merge some of the recent archives, I can't push the button again on that scheme until late September. -Steve Sanbeg 21:18, 21 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

OK I got rid that page. Let know when you run the archive and I will merge those items back in. Sorry for messing it up.--BirgitteSB 19:42, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
OK, that helps. I undid your edit to help keep things consistent, and archived to the /2008-8; normally, I would've called it /2008-07, but it's no problem to change it if that makes more sense to everyone. -Steve Sanbeg 04:39, 24 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I am all for automating this once you are confident it is reliable.--BirgitteSB 23:44, 26 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Admin bit

[edit]

According to Pathoschild, there's no policy; but seeing as I willingly requested the removal of my admin status (as I had no time for Wikisource), I could ask if you would reinstate it. Of course, it is your own decision, and if you'd rather I asked for a vote on WS:ADMINS again, I'm happy to do so. Jude (talk) 03:44, 27 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

As it has been long enough for that a confirmation would have taken place if you had never had the flag removed, I think there should be vote. There is also sort of a precedent with Ec for new votes after long wikibreaks.--BirgitteSB 01:57, 28 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

I would like to change from Henrydoktorski to Henry_Doktorski. I hope this is better. Henrydoktorski (talk) 19:52, 8 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Saw these two entries; how are they legitimate?

[edit]

Birgitte, I just saw the following two entries:

LDS Endowment 1984 at Wikisource
LDS Endowment 1990 at Wikisource

The articles state that they are recordings, but that is all. How can they be verified to be an accurate recording or just made up? The the LDS Church does not publish them because they say the endowment is sacred. I assume it is copyrighted, but that would need to be clarified with the LDS Church legal department. Your thoughts would be appreciated. Cheers. --67.183.129.82 20:29, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have raised these two to be discussed at WS:COPYVIO#LDS_Endowment --John Vandenberg (chat) 21:06, 6 October 2008 (UTC)Reply
I commented there.--BirgitteSB 00:18, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Politicaljunkie's confirmation

[edit]

Hello BirgitteSB. The result of Politicaljunkie's confirmation is up to the bureaucrats, now that the October confirmation period is over. Support for continued adminship is precisely 50%, which fails the simple majority needed for confirmation (but is right on the borderline). —Pathoschild 00:17:47, 05 November 2008 (UTC)

I am liking the particulars of the Restricted access policy less and less. It really does not describe things very well in terms of how we actually do thing. Desysoping for inactivity is described as automatic and voting is only described under the terms of a call for no confidence. I don't have any great ideas for alternatives however.--BirgitteSB 03:08, 5 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

USURP

[edit]

Hello. I noticed you were a crat from the WS:ADMIN page, and I was wondering how I would request that my Username on this wiki be changed from SynergeticMaggot to Synergy. Thank you in advance for your time. SynMag (talk) 23:03, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Done--BirgitteSB 23:50, 9 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Hmm. It doesn't appear to have occurred. When I logged in as User:Synergy (my main account now on all wikis), the contribs from the account I am editing under now, are not there. Perhaps I should have stated this before. :) Sorry (or is this not possible?). SynMag (talk) 01:29, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry I don't know what I did wrong before but it is showing up in the logs now. You may have re-do the unification. I am not sure how that works.--BirgitteSB 20:19, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
Not a problem at all. I added wikisource to my SUL. Thank you again. :) Synergy 05:32, 11 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

rename account

[edit]

I would like to rename my account to a new name; "Niduzzi", as my current name ("Izzudin") is already in use in id: and ar: by others. So I can't unify my account. Thanks! Izzudin (talk) 06:26, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Renaming

[edit]

Hi, could you please rename my account from "Thebainer" to "Stephen Bain"? I'm changing on all projects to use my real name. --bainer (talk) 05:46, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

I've gone ahead and done it for you.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 13:42, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
