Girard B. Henderson[edit]

Hi Greg (what happened to your 2006 incarnation btw?)

Just to let you know, I have deleted the author page you created for Girard B. Henderson: the court case is not authored by Henderson, but by the court, and the final work listed would be covered by copyright for a long time even if we accepted self-published works (which we usually do not). Since there are then no extant works by this author which we could conceivably host for the next century or so, we do not have Author: pages on them either. --Xover (talk) 06:29, 9 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Xover Greghenderson2006 was taken; or said I could not use it. Thanks for you update on Girard B. Henderson. I am just starting to use Wikisource so I am a beginner at this.--Greghenderson2020 (talk) 19:21, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Joseph Henderson v. United States[edit]

Xover I have written the document: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Joseph_Henderson_v._United_States. Please let me know if I am doing this correctly. Thanks!--Greghenderson2020 (talk) 20:26, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Source required[edit]

Hi. Would you please put the source detail at Talk:Eagle Quills for Whitcomb's work. Where Wikipedia uses citations, our equivalent for publications is the source of the work. Usually we would use template:textinfo for the purpose. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:02, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

billinghurst Sure, no problem. I am new at this. Thanks for the tip. I've just added it. --Greghenderson2020 (talk) 23:16, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for addition. Re newbieness: yep, I know. I am not, was once, and I know that good help without baggage is valued, so I get to play the role of mentor and aide. Welcome aboard, and we do encourage participation and questions at WS:Scriptorium and WS:Scriptorium/Help. Questions are not a burden, they are indications that our help pages are not suitable, though I do think that many of the questions are addressed there. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:47, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

And The Law and the Miner please — billinghurst sDrewth 02:35, 5 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Author:Joseph Henderson a writer?[edit]

Hi. We only create author pages if a person is an author of works that are in the public domain. If Henderson is not an author, then the page belongs in the Portal: namespace using either template:Portal header or Template:Person. Let me know if you need it moved over without a redirect. — billinghurst sDrewth 23:13, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

billinghurst How do I change this if it is already under Author:Joseph Henderson? --Greghenderson2020 (talk) 23:21, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
billinghurst I was able to use this to Template:Person. Let me know if this correct? --Greghenderson2020 (talk) 23:55, 2 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
In answer to your question, there will be a move tab/link in your top line of commands, probably in a drop down if you are using vector skin. With "autoconfirm" rights, it will allow move and leave a redirect, and EP with their advanced rights has moved without redirect. We will come along and clean up moves. [Apologies for the jargon, it will make sense with time spent in wikis.] — billinghurst sDrewth 00:51, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

It requires a page move to do that. I've moved him to Portal:Joseph Henderson. --EncycloPetey (talk) 00:47, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Author:George Faunce Whitcomb[edit]

EncycloPetey What is the best way to put the contents of a book into text format? If I upload a file, e.g. File:Jewels of Romance.pdf.pdf, how can I change the name from Jewels of Romance.pdf.pdf to Jewels of Romance.pdf?--Greghenderson2020 (talk) 17:13, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

When a file is uploaded, you are able to modify the username at the time of upload. Generally we would upload files to Commons, and of it is a scan of a book, we would ask that you use their {{book}} template. — billinghurst sDrewth 02:33, 5 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Place to upload files[edit]

Hi, The correct place to upload files is to Commons rather than here. We only accept files that are public domain under our rules, but not under theirs. Also, we remove the Google front page before uploading as this causes problems with pagination in the Index: Beeswaxcandle (talk) 18:19, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Beeswaxcandle Looks like Wikisource does have a Upload file link. Please take a look at: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Jewels_Of_Romance, to see if I did it correctly. Not sure how to remove the Google front page. In any case, the next step is converting the PDF to text and how to do this? --Greghenderson2020 ([[User talk) 18:49, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
The first step is to remove the Google notice page, then upload the file to Commons. Yes, Wikisource has an upload link, but only for works that cannot be hosted at Commons but are eligible to be hosted here. It is always preferred to have the file at Commons rather than locally. Placing a file at Commons makes it possible to add all sorts of links and data that Wikisource is not equipped to handle.
Once the Google notice is removed, and the file exists at Commons, the next step is possible. But if the Google notice has not been removed, then the next step should not be undertaken. It makes a lot of extra work to have to change things after the fact. If you cannot remove the Google notice yourself, you can post a request that someone assist you, with a link to the location of the original file. --EncycloPetey (talk) 19:09, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
EncycloPetey OK, I was able to remove the extra Google notice using MS Word. Here is the location of the file Jewels_of_Romance. Pleasea let me know how to convert to text to display on Wikisource?--Greghenderson2020 (talk) 20:08, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've set up the Index: correctly for you. Now, you need to go through the pages and proofread them. For help with this process, see Help:Beginner's guide to proofreading. Once that's done come back to me or EncycloPetey and we'll help you put the text into the Mainspace: page. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 20:40, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Note, the index is at Index:Jewels of Romance.pdf. An Index page always matches the file's name exactly, but with "File:" replaced by "Index:". Because this is a book of poetry, and is a little more complicated than a prose work, I have proofread page 7 as an example. You can open the edit window for that page to see the behind-the-scenes markup. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:42, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
It's too early to transclude anything more—particularly as it's not going to all go onto a single page. Each poem will have its own page. Get everything proofread first. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 23:58, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Beeswaxcandle Thanks for your help. I have now proofread all the pages for this work. Please chceck when you get a chance so we can add the previous and next links to the main page.--Greghenderson2020 (talk) 23:50, 4 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
I've done the first three (blue links on the Main: page). To understand what I've done, I recommend reading Help:Subpages. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 00:15, 5 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Joseph Henderson's Obituary[edit]

According to the header, Henderson wrote his own obituary. Note that PNG files will not transclude they way they should. Ideally, files should be PDF or DjVu. --EncycloPetey (talk) 22:35, 3 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

EncycloPetey I have changed this. Please see Joseph Henderson for the update.--Greghenderson2020 (talk) 21:37, 4 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes, that is in keeping with Wikisource norms. --EncycloPetey (talk) 22:05, 4 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Without Text[edit]

Pages like this one are considered to be "without text" (without content). The "text" on this page was added by the library that had the book. It was neither written by the author nor printed by the publisher. Wikisource ignores such additions, as they are not part of the published work. --EncycloPetey (talk) 20:28, 4 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

EncycloPetey Thanks for the info. This is my first translation of a book. I noticed that on the Jewels of Romance page you are limiting the number of pages showing. When done, then we can display all the pages, right?--Greghenderson2020 (talk) 21:44, 4 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
Yes. However, we typically put each chapter or poem on a separate page, organized as a series, using the previous / next links in the header. The will be easier to demonstrate once you've finished proofreading the book.
I transcluded a little to start with so you could have an idea how the process will work. --EncycloPetey (talk) 22:06, 4 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
EncycloPetey Thanks for your help. I have now proofread all the pages of the work. Please chceck when you get a chance so we can add the previous and next links.--Greghenderson2020 (talk) 23:37, 4 April 2020 (UTC)Reply
It looks as though @Beeswaxcandle: has set up a more complicated page structure than I would have used. It might be worth waiting to check with him regarding the next step. --EncycloPetey (talk) 23:46, 4 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

Author pages[edit]

The main divisions of the page should always be "Works" and "Works about (surname)". Further subdivisions are possible under these headings, if there is sufficient diversity of works. Help:Author pages provides the general information about Author pages. --EncycloPetey (talk) 17:41, 6 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

EncycloPetey, Sorry, just got to this now. --Greghenderson2020 (talk) 16:40, 29 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Transcluding when there is text proofread pages[edit]

Hi. I have deleted some of your created pages. 1) we don't create redirects as author pages, those pages are created within the Author: namespace. Works are only create when we have something of value to transcribe. We would also only transcribe the actual printed works, not the enforced pages of Google to tag pages. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:43, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Billinghurst: Thank you for your help! It has been a while since I have done this and I thought there was a simpler process. After reading through the Help:Adding texts page, I was able to figure it out. I would like to add page numbers so it is not one long page, but I can do this later. Please let me know if I have missed anything. --Greghenderson2020 (talk) 15:37, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
