Ancient and Classical Texts

Ancient and Classical Texts covers all works originally written before the Middle Ages. A good rule: The Arab conquest in the seventh century was a major shift, and may be taken to mark the beginning of Medieval Literature. Texts written before that belong in this category.

This is an index for English translations of books or other texts from Ancient or Classical times. The original languages of many or most such texts would be classical Hebrew, Sanskrit, Greek, Latin. (But perhaps ambitious contributors might want to add English translations of Egyptian hieroglyphics or Akkadian myths!)

Sometimes it is unclear whether a text belongs in this period or whether it is later (medieval). In fact, some texts continued to be revised, redacted and expanded over the course of many centuries, such that dating them becomes impossible. In case of doubt, upload the text under the category you think most readers would be likely to look for it.
