- For what it's worth, I don't think I did this quite right, since the inserted page is black and white and not cropped... but it's functional enough as a placeholder, and I've already transcribed the text on the page (which isn't completely legible on the placeholder either), so it's fair to call it resolve. --Pokechu22 (talk) 18:56, 12 March 2022 (UTC)

Notifying all members of Scan Lab (more info · opt out): The IA has restricted access to this book even though it was published in 1926. Can someone please upload it from [3]. It helped turn Harlem into a tourist attraction and remains an important, but controversial portrayal of African-American culture during the 1920s. Languageseeker (talk) 23:09, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Languageseeker: Presumably because this is a 1928 reprint (not that they've managed to capture the date in their metadata, as usual), but if the IA restricts the download there's nothing really we can do. I'm guessing they'll open it up next year so we can maybe grab it then. Xover (talk) 14:46, 17 March 2022 (UTC)

Notifying all members of Scan Lab (more info · opt out): Seems that Zola’s masterpiece Germinal (1885) hasn’t shown up yet. The best I could find outside the copyrighted Penguin books in IA is this 1925 Knopff US release translated by Ellis (1859-1939) decades earlier (1894) at HT. feydey (talk) 10:19, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
The Secret of Chimneys
- This section was archived on a request by: --Xover (talk) 18:06, 17 March 2022 (UTC)
Can someone track down a 1925 printing of The Secret of Chimneys by Agatha Christie? Languageseeker (talk) 18:40, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- I can see a 1978 US version with, apparently, no-notice cover art at the IA (same idea as the Lovecraft one). It's not a first edition but a long stretch, but better than a kick in the teeth? Needs finagling out of the IA since they've classified as copyright due to the publication date I suppose. Inductiveload—talk/contribs 22:46, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Inductiveload I think that I have you beat with a 1958 edition. [7] Could you liberate this from the IA? Languageseeker (talk) 22:59, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
- That's a UK edition, so the cover art is almost certainly copyrighted in the US because it was probably in copyright in 1996. The US edition has to comply with US copyright formalities and failed to do so, as far as I can tell, by not including a copyright notice for the cover and any other ancillary content. Inductiveload—talk/contribs 15:45, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Inductiveload Ah well, then how about this one [8]? It's from 1987, but a US hardcover. Trying to figure out the edition that probably has the least amount of errors. This one also has a TOC. Languageseeker (talk) 16:07, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Languageseeker Done Index:The Secret of Chimneys - 1987.djvu. FYI, 1987 is nearly on the edge of no-notice's scope: from February 1989 it doesn't apply (though still it would only cover new additions, not the 1925 original). Inductiveload—talk/contribs 22:00, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Can someone track down a 1923 printing of The Murder on the Links by Agatha Christie? Languageseeker (talk) 18:40, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Languageseeker can't see a 1923 version, but there's another of the hardcover 80s editions here: https://archive.org/details/murderonlinks0000chri_f3i5 if you like. Again, no notice for the cover, etc., and no sign of a subsequent registration that I can see. Inductiveload—talk/contribs 22:02, 14 February 2022 (UTC)

Over compressed scans. Suggest a rebuild from Internet Archive identifier: therepublicofpla00platuoft if possible. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 15:11, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
- Looks like the actual upstream scans are just slightly out of focus for the title page (e.g. https://archive.org/download/therepublicofpla00platuoft/page/n8.jpg). Most of the book looks fine. Inductiveload—talk/contribs 15:21, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Inductiveload: Nope, about every other page was badly out of focus; which, when combined with the very aggressive compression (~900MB JP2 -> 10MB DjVu) made for pretty horrible results. I've regenerated it to roughly ~75MB which looks like it's within a reasonable spitting distance of the point of diminishing returns. @ShakespeareFan00: See if that helped a bit? Xover (talk) 13:40, 21 December 2021 (UTC)
- Huh, I must have contrived to click only on even pages! I'm going to blame...wait for it...Glaucona. Eh? Eh? Thanks Xover! Inductiveload—talk/contribs 16:54, 21 December 2021 (UTC)

- It's still a little out of focus, but it's readable... Not sure if it will OCR though. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 09:09, 22 December 2021 (UTC)
- @ShakespeareFan00: My testing says "yes". There are a lot of problems with this scan (the out of focus pages, pages scanned at an angle, insufficient gutters, etc.), but viewed in light of that the OCR results appear rather good in my testing; both the OCR in the hidden text layer and the ad hoc OCR from the gadgets. Page 123, 127 and 237 missing, should be inserted after 126, 129 and 238 of the DjVU file, respectively. A complete scan can be found at Hathitrust. It seems like the scan on the Internet Archive has been used for what we have now, since it has the same pages missing.
I would like to learn how to do this myself, can you teach me?

Notifying all members of Scan Lab (more info · opt out):
- @Hamaryns:: the short summary of how I do it is:
- Download the images you want
- Download the DJVU to fix
- Convert them to DJVU with Djvulibre:
- JPG:
c44 123.jpg 123.djvu
- PNG
convert 123.png 123.pbm
cjb2 123.pbm 123.djvu
- JPG:
- At this point, if you were super keen you could also do the OCR, but I don't bother for a few inserted pages since the OCR tool will be basically exactly the same.
- Insert the files into the file (the number is the page to insert before). Work backwards from the end so the page numbers of the insertion points don't change.
djvm -i mainfile.djvu 123.djvu 127
- If it sounds a bit fiddly, well, it kind of is! Inductiveload—talk/contribs 22:39, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
- One addition. I prefer to resize the image to the same resolution used in the djvu file, as well as the dpi in cjb2/c44 commands (usually all pages are the same) so that when the djvu is viewed with djview, the page size is uniform. You can find resolution/dpi looking at the properties of the djvu file via djvudump <filename>. E.g. for one page
INFO [10] DjVu 2664x4250, v25, 500 dpi, gamma=2.2
Mpaa (talk) 23:56, 11 December 2021 (UTC) - It worked. Will look into resizing next time (if that ever happens). Result here: [9]. Done, thanks! Hamaryns (talk) 13:15, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Notifying all members of Scan Lab (more info · opt out): I have scanned in the missing pages here, as well as the map which was lost in the original scan. Could the pages please be added into the scan, as appropriate? Thank you. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 21:17, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- @TE(æ)A,ea. I can do it, but where does the map go? In future, it would be helpful in general if you could explicitly indicate the destination offsets. It's very easy to flub the mental arithmetic and working from a pre-made list allows to double-check as one goes and make sure the fixer is on the same page (pun intended).
- Also if you have the physical volume to hand and the time and inclination, could you run the map again in full colour rather than bitonal? Then it can be extracted more cleanly (and it would be the best rendition of this map on the entire Internet). Inductiveload—talk/contribs 21:53, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- Inductiveload: The map goes after the copyright page. This is the “high-quality” scan, unfortunately, because the copy I received was the separate storage copy, not the original. In the original copy, I presume the map came before the title page; but I didn’t have access to the original copy of volume 1. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 22:09, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- @TE(æ)A,ea. Oh, I see. I thought you may be toting a physical copy! Scan is uploaded now, please check. Inductiveload—talk/contribs 22:20, 16 December 2021 (UTC)
- Inductiveload: It looks great! Thank you. The scans are from a physical copy, although I have since returned that copy. What took place, I am not wholly aware, but I presume as follows: the scanning institution has one copy each of the two volumes of San Kuo; in order to preserve the original copies, duplicates were made. These duplicates were created by scanning the original, printing pages of the scans, and binding them. I’m not quite sure why this was undertaken, but it appears that this is what happened. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 02:42, 17 December 2021 (UTC)

- If the djvu for this ever appears, maybe it can be added to Index:Goblin Market (Rackham)--RaboKarbakian (talk) 18:58, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- @RaboKarbakian: Not sure what happened with this one, but… Done Index:Goblin Market (1933).djvu. Would you like me to move the Page: pages over from Index:Goblin Market (Rackham)? (in this particular case you can also just do it yourself manually if you want, and I'll just delete the redirects at the old index when you're done) Xover (talk) 09:24, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
- Xover: First, thank you so much for this! Second, the history of this as I saw it: on 7 December 2021 when I logged into commons, I had a notification from you here but when I logged in here, the notification "automagically" changed to be from Inductiveload. Then, this was closed in a way that made me wonder about what and how much was going on that for, whatever reason, I cannot see. So, mostly I have been "wait and see" with the occasional holding back of unjustified (meaning: unjustifiable because of how much I did not know)) feelings. I mention the history because, it is interesting as it is all about this page/area.

- I made this Aesop commitment, which is almost completed. I will happily slide the manual movement of the Goblin Market pages in right after its completion and before I clean up the style mess that SF left my Meteorology book in, if you have the patience to wait for that. Once again, thank you so much!--RaboKarbakian (talk) 12:50, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
- @RaboKarbakian: Either way is fine with me. Just hit me up when you need a batch delete. Meanwhile I'll tag this thread as resolved just to clear out the backlog. Xover (talk) 15:09, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

- FYI, I wouldn't worry too much about these. I'm planning to replace them with (excellent) scans from Modernist Journals. Hopefully I can also figure out the page lists (that's why I haven't done them just yet). Inductiveload—talk/contribs 18:39, 29 January 2022 (UTC)
