Since I'm still IP banned from Commons, can you upload these two? I'll probably pester you for help with the new PD material sometime in January, but I'll try to make a spreadsheet for that if I'm allowed to post on the bugtracker.

@Languageseeker that's depressing, but I guess not surprising that no-one has replied to you for that long :-( Maybe email the stewards (stewards@wikimedia.org; which you probably will have to do if you're using a VPN or something). You should at least be allowed to use Phab as they use completely different systems. Hope it's going OK wherever you are!

Spreadsheets indeed always preferred. I expect I'll be busy in Jan, but I'll try my best. You can also email me (Special:EmailUser/Inductiveload), but again that might take a while to deal with.

Fail at IAupload >> "local-swift-codfw"

I was trying to create the large "file:Dictionary of National Biography, Third Supplement.djvu" and it got all the way to the end and failed in what looks like a cookie issue fail

@Billinghurst: I manually uploaded a DjVu of it at File:Dictionary of National Biography, Third Supplement.djvu (feel free to overwrite or delete if you need to). Not sure what that failure was: from the error it looks mostly like a transient error down in the Swift storage engine in the Dallas datacenter, but that seems a bit random. The ZIP of the raw scans had two dud images (corrupt files) that I just replaced with blank pages (it's the only two blanks in the front matter, and I'm pretty sure they're supposed to be blank even if DLI nuked all other blank pages from the scan). --Xover (talk) 13:08, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

mw.ext.proofreadPage access to index from ns0

I don't suppose mw:Extension:Proofread Page/Lua reference has an undocumented function to get a title object for the associated Index: file when invoked on a mainspace page? Alternately, is it something that's of reasonable complexity to add?

Interface-wise, I'm thinking any page with PRP active conceivably has an mw.ext.proofreadPage.associatedIndex(), that'll be a self-ref on the Index: page and a title object for the Index: in all other namespaces (main, Page:, Translation:). Semantically it's looser than the Source link: it is an "associated" Index: that may be the transclusion source, but may also be something else that's relevant in some way. And it'd also make sense to return a list if multiple indexes are transcluded on the same page (or always, actually, for consistency), to avoid having to worry about what the Index: is in those cases.

Context is looking up an author's initials for the DNB, when the initials are not unique across volumes. So getting the correct author for a given set of initials you need to also know what volume you're in, and to avoid making the user pass that in manually the sanest approach seems to be to trigger off the (known, regular) filename. And because the code needs to work both in ns:0 and in Page:, the obvious page name to use is the Index:'s name.

Ppoem formatting advice..

So I was wondering if you had some suggestions? My thought is that it's effectively a table.

@ShakespeareFan00: That looks like a table with a whole lot of {{gap}} for indentation to me. Definitely not something {{ppoem}} should be used for! Two columns, and set {{ts|hi}} on the cells in the left column. The nesting is too deep to sensibly use padding (e.g. {{ts|pl1}}, {{ts|pl2}}, etc.) for the indentation, otherwise that would have been a better option (fixing the hanging indent, which will otherwise be imperfect when using {{gap}}). Hmm, actually, the deepest indentation here is just 9 levels so making pl1–pl9 is an option, if a slightly hacky one. It just isn't suitable for arbitrarily deep indentation. Page scans

When I need to examine very small details I click on the scan and it gets larger which is great. However, recently it does not go back to the normal size no matter what I do. This is not a "bug", but a "feature". It was mentioned in last week's Tech News. Basically, the assumption (by whom I don't know) is that if you need to change the zoom on one page for an Index: you'll need that zoom level for all pages associated with that Index. Smart Set duplication?

I see Index:The Smart Set (Volume 71).djvu but also Index:The Smart Set (Volume 71, Number 3).djvu (1–4), also files. Are these duplicates or are they different series? easy distinguishing of auto vs. manual categorisation?

Is there a system methodology to tell whether a category has been added manually or via WD? Looking to do some cleaning up and wasn't wanting to use brute force if it was unnecessary. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:07, 1 February 2023 (UTC)

FWIW I have managed a way to lightly brute force the tidy up, find with Petscan which allows me to then pump in the missing data with an aligned tool. Then use Cat-a-Lot to remove the local categorisation. What I cannot do is identify which beasties I have done. What I also haven't been able to figure out whether I have tidied up, though I suppose it doesn't matter. (those of us who do hospital corners! <sigh>) Soon I will also work out a way to tag the pages that are autoconnected, with the irony that it will probably be grunt work. — billinghurst sDrewth 21:56, 23 April 2023 (UTC)

Loeb Classical Library and its subpages, why?

Hi. Why do we have a book series sitting at a work level? I was looking at Loeb Classical Library and thinking that it belongs in the portal namespace, and the work Loeb Classical Library/L001 as a root level work called The Argonautica with the series as a portal link. What evidence do we that the reference "L001" is regularly used a a book title? Not the sort of thing that we would string them together, and we don't with any other series of discrete works. I think it just seemed like a good idea at the time way back when I was young and dumb. Excessive attachment to the idea of a strict order to the universe (trying to use Wikidata burned that concept right out of my brain!) and/or not appreciating the ideal balance point of work vs sub-work and also maybe not appreciating that the darn series isn't even complete. Tell bot to behave

I reverted your bot for the second time on its edit on Index:A Compendium of Irish Biography.djvu‎‎ as I do not consider that work is useful for the monthly challenge. A revert should be sufficient to stop a work being added, or it should only try to add a work once. I would prefer to not have to block the work, nor dig around looking for instructions. @Billinghurst this seems like a bit of an over-reaction. Firstly, the work is, whether you like it or not, in the Monthly Challenge. Added here. That is the single point of truth for its inclusion in the MC, the Category merely represents that. Thus, I claim that until you remove the work from the MC (probably discussion at Wikisource:Community collaboration/Monthly Challenge/Nominations), it is correct for that Index to be in that category, and your feelings don't come into it. Second, it should have been pretty obvious to an experienced user that the bot is replicating something to maintain consistency and didn't notice you reverting it, and thus getting into an edit war with it was only going to go one way and just gives you an excuse to blow your top and block it. I think maybe you might have been able to live with the presence in the category for longer than 4 hours and give me longer than 1 hour at 3am to notice your message? Was it such a crisis for you?

Regardless, I maintain that that actions of the bot are justified, and representing the current state of the MC is reasonable to do. I will, of course, take this to WS:AN as it pertains to administrative actions and operation of a bot. Meanwhile the bot will not perform further categorisation in the MC at all. Your bot adds something; has no information that it is doing the task, nor indicates a means to resolve it. I blocked it for one day, and none of the tasks listed on its operational page are either urgent or critical. Plus you also have all the means to resolve and to unblock. No user should be needing to go through huge hoops to know what a bot is doing, those hoops are the task of the operator. Thanks for the pointer to the data list, I have removed the work, I have kept my head out of monthly challenge and its operations, and wish to continue to do so. The monthly Challenge is probably the single most carefully carefully documented project at Wikisource, though it concede it's not always perfect, and I will (already have) add a link on the bot page; as you say, it should have one. If you wish to claim ownership of the Index and prevent others touching it, by the way, I suggest you remove it also from Wikisource:Proofread of the Month/suggested works, where you personally put it 13 years ago. What polite communication sounds like, by the way, after the first instance of the re-adding: "Hello! I notice your bot added a Monthly Challenge category to an Index I have an interest in, and hasn't noticed my manually removing it. I was trying to remove the work from the Challenge entirely, as don't think this work is suitable. Could you please remove it, as simply removing the category is evidently not the way to do it?"

Hi, I was trying to import this script over on Simple English Wikipedia to help with some de-linting efforts. I can't seem to get it to function. I wasn't expecting it to work first time, given the script is somewhat Wikisource centric. It would however be nice to use the regex search and replace on another project. @ShakespeareFan00 I'm afraid without any details other than "it's not working for me", I can't do a lot to help. I'm also afraid that I'm not really in a position to make any promises about working on other wikis or, indeed, make any maintenance promises at all on an explicitly alpha-grade tool.

That said, it looks like the issue is that Mediawiki:Gadget-utils-difference.js is needed, which is an imported chunk of the enWP popup tool that's intended to be shared with other tools. I'm not sure you can make cross-wiki dependencies with ResourceLoader, so you may need to copy that file to Simple WP (you'll need an interface admin). Looking at the code of the User:Inductiveload/maintain/load.js I have a suspicion, that when I trey to use it cross-wiki, it's trying to load the main part of the script (and dependencies) directly from Simple, where it of course doesn't exist.) Looks like I'll have to take a local copy of the script(s) or as you say ask an interface admin on Simple. Thanks for the fast turn-around.

@Xover this is very strange, I feel sure these would have had a description. For example, the automatic summary on File:The Strand Magazine (Volume 23).djvu is == {{int:filedesc}} == {{Do not move to Commons|expires=2022|why=Non-US periodical may have contributions that are not in the Public Domain in their home country}} {{Book | Author = | Editor = | Translator = | Illustrator = | Title = The Strand Magazine | Subtitle = | Series title = | Volume = 23 | Edition = | Publisher = G. Newnes | Printer = | Date = 1902 | City = London | Language = {{language|en}} | Description = | So..., which indicates they were uploaded with text, but there's no sign of such text in the history. Have some revisions been stomped in the DB somehow? The reason for the local upload is that as non-US periodicals without an exhaustive search of author death dates, the non-US copyright status is uncertain. Though actually up to v23 are now OK, as they've passed the 120 year cutoff (c.f. {{PD-old-collective}}). And I can't really account for v4. Big files upload issues on WS

Hi, I am trying to upload files to Category:Land&Liberty. As you can see, many fail to upload due to time out (all those bigger than 350 MB). Now my personal connection may be too slow, so I am setting up an account on Toolforge. Still I can't figure out how to upload the files once they are copied on TF. Or any other idea? Need your input on a policy impacting gadgets and UserJS

There is an ongoing discussion on a proposed policy governing the use of external resources in gadgets and UserJS. The proposed Third-party resources policy aims at making the UserJS and Gadgets landscape a bit safer by encouraging best practices around external resources. After an initial non-public conversation with a small number of interface admins and staff, we've launched a much larger, public consultation to get a wider pool of feedback for improving the policy proposal. Based on the ideas received so far, the proposed policy now includes some of the risks related to user scripts and gadgets loading third-party resources, best practices for gadgets and UserJS developers, and exemptions requirements such as code transparency and inspectability.

As an interface administrator, your feedback and suggestions are warmly welcome until July 17, 2023 on the policy talk page.

Warn about admin edits, User:Inductiveload/ActivePageAlert

Would it be possible to have a config setting to warn about edits from admins? Namely:- (https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Special:ListUsers?username=&group=sysop&creationSort=1&wpsubmit=&wpFormIdentifier=mw-listusers-form&limit=50)

I'd also like to use a config from this script to exclude LintErrors in pages that admins have contributed to, as it is reasonable to consider that administrators will know what they are doing ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:07, 13 July 2023 (UTC)

Jump to file can't see an IA link inside IAl template.

I had to had the untemplated link for the script to grab hi-res:- https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_New_International_Encyclop%C3%A6dia_1st_ed._v._01.djvu

Would it be possible for the script to be updated to look for the IA link template, and generate the relevant URL from that? There are a number of files on Commons that do not have raw links. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 14:49, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Jump to file cannot cope with sub-files..

Index:Pentagon-Papers-Part V. B. 2. a.djvu It takes the first part of the identifier and links to the first file in the list at IA (the index), rather than a specfic file, DESPITE the full path being given in the link at Commons. Suggestions? ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 19:22, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

Help with Pathoschild

Hi, I came across some information on @Mpaa's user page (User:Mpaa#JSON) about your code and I decided to give it a go. I have previously managed to incorporate other stuff in my User:Chrisguise/global.js and so, per the information I have pasted in the loader instruction (mw.loader.load('//tools-static.wmflabs.org/meta/scripts/pathoschild.templatescript.js');). I then created a subpage (User:Chrisguise/Regexp toolbar.js) and cut and pasted the Pathoschild code into it. However, nothing seems to have happened. I've done Ctrl-F5, restarted my browser (Firefox) and I've looked in all the places I can think of where new options might have appeared but have found nothing. Have I done something wrong? How is this 'capability' supposed to manifest itself?

About Help:Page styles
