Could someone please reload this file so we are without that faux lead and rotten colouration page that we pic up from the JP2 conversions. I do wish we could resolve that issue that they don't show in the upload bot, and voila/ugh there once converted and uploaded with the text pages out of kilter. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:12, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Billinghurst: Done. Please check that the results are acceptable. Xover (talk) 13:38, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- Work seems to be fully proofread so I am going to go ahead and assume this is ok and can be tagged for archiving now. Xover (talk) 09:13, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
Notifying all members of Scan Lab (more info · opt out): This index/scan is missing 2 images as per the TOC: "Princess Bismarck" after Page 88, and "Emperor William I" after Page 162. There should also be a blank page after these missing pages.
I stopped proofreading at Page 88 when I realized there is a missing image but forgot to update the status to "File to fix." Now another user has "proofread" most of the work which makes the task of adding the missing pages quite complicated. I have a PDF file now with the missing pages added but simply uploading that will cause a mess.
Could the pages between 88 and 162 (162 included) be moved forward by 2, and pages after 162 moved forward by 4? Or will a manual copy-paste be the best way? Ciridae (talk) 12:11, 13 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Ciridae: Just shifting the pages as you describe should not be a problem. Just go ahead and upload the new version of the file and drop a note here, and we should be able to get page moves done relatively quickly. Xover (talk) 09:18, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Xover: I've uploaded the new version of the file, but it looks as though there's something wrong with it because thumbnails and page images aren't loading. Would you be able to fix it? Ciridae (talk) 04:35, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Ciridae: I can make you a DjVu and migrate the pages over. Where did you get the four missing pages? Xover (talk) 16:21, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Xover: Yes, that would be great. I got the missing pages from another IA file, IA. Would you be converting the existing PDF to DJVU? Ciridae (talk) 06:57, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Ciridae: Ok, I've regenerated a DjVu from the source scans with the missing pages patched in, and migrated everything over to Index:Bismarck and the Foundation of the German Empire (1899).djvu. Please check that I didn't mess up anything.PS. It's not a good idea to start editing, creating pages, etc. while I am actively working on it. In future, please wait until you've been notified that the migration is complete before diving in. Xover (talk) 11:59, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
- Oh, and you may also want to propose the broken PDF for deletion on Commons. Xover (talk) 12:01, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
- @Xover: Will do. Thanks for everything. Ciridae (talk) 12:49, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

Sketches of Tokyo Life

Notifying all members of Scan Lab (more info · opt out): A scan is available here, with TIFF and JPEG images on IA. It is PD-US
, as it was published in 1895. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 00:07, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- @TE(æ)A,ea.: Done. File:Sketches of Tokyo Life (1895).djvu. Please check that the results are acceptable.PS. What a wonderful and beautiful find!PPS. ~8GB of TIFF files compressed down to ~90MB of DjVu. That's roughly 100:1 compression ratio. Xover (talk) 13:15, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- Xover: Thank you! It looks great. I was originally looking at this a long time ago (I think), and found the Sketches on Google Books, but the scan was blocked. I got over this copy to scan, and am glad I did, so I could get high-quality copies of the images. Your compressive abilities are quite impressive—the power of DJVU, alright! By the way, would you mind doing the same thing to A Forest Story (recently uploaded) and The Magic Flutes (currently uploading)? These ones are for Jan Kameníček, but the (many) images are very beautiful besides. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 16:26, 15 May 2023 (UTC)
- @TE(æ)A,ea.: What's the licensing for these? As illustrated translations we need to know the status for the original, the translation, and the illustrations. Xover (talk) 10:26, 18 May 2023 (UTC)
- Xover: They are both
PD-US
for Czech text and images andPD-US-no-notice
for the translations; for more (and appropriateness for Wikimedia Commons), you can ask Jan.Kamenicek. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 02:04, 20 May 2023 (UTC)- @Xover: Exactly. The Czech original of A Forest Story (Pohádka lesa) including theimages was first published in 1923. The Czech original of The Magic Flutes (Radovánky]) including the images was first published in 1927. So both originals are PD-US. As for the translations, they are both from 1929 and although there is a notice "all rights reserved", it lacks the symbol ©, and so if I understand it right it should not count as a proper copyright notice. If it does, it was not renewed anyway. I am very thankful to TE(æ)A,ea. for the scans and extracting the images in a quality way would be a great help too. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 11:35, 20 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Jan.Kamenicek: Identity of author, translator, and illustrator, and their vital years, please? Author page, Wikidata item, Wikipedia article, etc.; anything you happen to have for each of them just so I can check pma. terms, fill in the templates correctly, and so forth. Xover (talk) 20:21, 29 May 2023 (UTC)
- Author of both: Josef Kožíšek (1861–1933)
Illustrator of both: Rudolf Mates (1881–1966)
Translator of A Forest Story: Rafael De Szalatnay (1884–1963)
Translator of The Magic Flutes: Clara Vostrovsky Winlow (1871–1963) --Jan Kameníček (talk) 21:30, 29 May 2023 (UTC)- @Jan.Kamenicek, @TE(æ)A,ea.: Meh. That's quite a lot to untangle…But the images were first published in Czechoslovakia along with the Czech original text, in 1923 and 1927 respectively. These are thus PD in the US through expiry of a pub. +95 term. But both are still in a pma. 70 copyright term in the Czech Republic. The translations were first published in the US in 1929 (after the pub. +95 cutoff) but with defective copyright notices and, failing that, without renewal in the 28th year; and the translations are thus PD in the US and all countries that apply the rule of the shorter term. Worst case their US term will expire at the end of next year. So… All parts of these works are PD in the US and can be uploaded to enWS. The images and the Czech text are in copyright in the Czech Republic, and as a derivative work this extends to the translation as well, so no parts of the works can be uploaded to Commons until after 2036.Someone will have to check that I didn't get confused anywhere along the way there, but in any case: File:A Forest Story (1929).djvu and File:The Magic Flutes (1929).djvu. Both local and tagged {{do not move to Commons}}. Xover (talk) 14:44, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
- @Xover: Great! As for the licences, I think you got them right. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 15:45, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

How Henry Ford is regarded in Brazil
Notifying all members of Scan Lab (more info · opt out): The scan can be downloaded easily enough (here), but the pages need to be split. The translation was published in 1926 and the original author died in 1948 (Brazil is PMA 70), not sure of the translator’s years. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 01:06, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- @TE(æ)A,ea.: We're going to need the identity and vital years for Aubrey Stuart in any case, so you might as well start the research on that (Billinghurst might be able to help; they're an absolute genious at that kind of thing). I took a quick look at the scan and it looks like another one of those cases where it looks like it should be possible to automate it, but every time I think I've found ways to do that I've been disappointed and had to do it more or less manually (i.e. sloooooow and labour-intensive). I'll take a look at some point when I have the time available (IRL is keeping me busy just now), but you should probably be prepared for this taking some time (unless the tools actually come through for me this time). Xover (talk) 09:29, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- I wonder if this is Aubrey Newton Stuart d. 1964 in Rio, and whether this is the Aubrey N. Stuart, the chess columnist who emigrated from Georgetown, Guyana to Brazil. MarkLSteadman (talk) 12:48, 17 June 2023 (UTC)
- @MarkLSteadman: Thanks. That does sound like a likely candidate. Xover (talk) 17:36, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Xover: It was published in 1926, so it’s
PD-US
in any case. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 13:51, 17 June 2023 (UTC)- @TE(æ)A,ea.: Sure. But we still need to document the actual copyright status to determine whether to host it here or on Commons (and if here, why we can't have it on Commons). Xover (talk) 17:36, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
- Xover: I think Commons assumes 120 years after publication for authors with unknown dates of death, so I think
PD-US
plusdo not move to Commons|reason=translator’s death year undetermined
. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 17:45, 21 June 2023 (UTC)- I believe they distinguish between a known person whose death date is unknown, and an person who is unknown (or anonymous). The laws are easier to interpret when the identity is unknown versus a known person with an unknown death year. --EncycloPetey (talk) 17:51, 21 June 2023 (UTC)
