I'm trying to improve articles about the pioneer mountaineers. I would appreciate if someone could upload :

  • From the Himalaya to Skye from John Norman Collie.
not available at IA, other works by author at IA and GB
  • My climbs in the Alps and Caucasus from Albert F. Mummery. (external scan)
available at IA, other works by author at IA and GB

I couldn't find the Collie book, but My climbs in the Alps and Caucasus is now on commons here. Mukkakukaku (talk) 21:00, 2 March 2014 (UTC)
See Index:My Climbs in the Alps and Caucasus.djvu--Mpaa (talk) 22:03, 21 June 2014 (UTC)
I can only find "From the Himalaya to Skye" as a 2003 reprint, ostensibly of a 1902 original. However Collie has a 1902 book called "Climbing on the Himalaya and other Mountain Ranges". Based on the similarity of the topic, as well as the fact that there is no edition of "From the Himalaya to Sky" available other than the 2003, I'm concluding that "Climbing on..." is the original printing. (That and the publisher's info for the 2003 version says it also includes some other writings so I'm guessing it's some sort of original+miscellany sort of collection.) Furthermore, searching that title on the internet only turns up the 2003 edition. Climbing on the Himalaya and other Mountain Ranges is already available here: (transcription project). I'm going to consider this request filled unless someone has proof that this is not actually the same work. --Mukkakukaku (talk) 22:57, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Wikisource! I've been doing research for w:Pisces (astrology) and found this book: (external scan). I see it's not here on Wikisource. After making a short page at Wikiquote, I think that I could make a Zodiac page here, maybe even one for Pisces. Can someone upload this book for me? - Starcartographer (talk) 04:04, 20 January 2013 (UTC)

Google won't let me see it. I checked and it is not yet available at archive.org. Someone who can see it will need to load it grab it from Google and move it to IA. — billinghurst sDrewth 04:23, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Google won't let me see it either. I'll ask Ineuw to have a look for us. Beeswaxcandle (talk) 18:09, 20 January 2013 (UTC)
Sorry for the belated reply. Before posting here, I went through all my current options to get the book, but failed. Google blocks me because my home account is Canadian, even though I am not in Canada at the moment. It is also listed on Open Library, which is a subsidiary of Internet Archive, but they only list the recent 2006-7 publication which is only available for purchase. I will ask someone tomorrow to get it through Google, as the last possibility. — Ineuw talk 02:59, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for fixing the index file. I was basing it off of the Featured Text and it seemed like a lot of work to create an image per page. - Starcartographer (talk) 20:17, 21 January 2013 (UTC)

I know a way of seeing books on Google, even though I live in Australia. I've got a VPN (Virtual Private Network) called Hotspot Shield which I use to watch American TV programs (that's the free part—other countries you have to pay). It's available for Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android and can be found here http://www.hotspotshield.com --kathleen wright5 (talk) 11:45, 4 January 2014 (UTC)

It is also available with scans at archive.org [3] by Lydia Maria Child, and this copy looking the best of the lot.. We would generally look to utilise a scan and reproduce rather than take in a gutenberg copy, especially as it has images that will need to be extracted and cleaned for Commons. I wouldn't expect this one to be done in a hurry, and at best all I can suggest is that it could be added to Wikisource talk:Proofread of the Month for 2014. — billinghurst sDrewth 12:36, 17 November 2013 (UTC)

I think this text would be a great addition to Wikisource. Here is its gutenberg and archive.org pages. Is it possible to upload it to Commons (can someone find a way)? Thanks, DanielTom (talk) 18:52, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading, and for the tip. By the way, I just finished uploading another work to Commons (the traditional way) and, like you, I left the first page (attribution to Google) in it. Are we supposed to delete those? (I prefer to keep the attribution, those pages don't bother me, but if someone else wants to delete them that's fine too...) ~ DanielTom (talk) 19:37, 13 February 2014 (UTC)

Another novel on Wikipedia, a Canadian city's namesake via its lead character, has caught my attention. Besides, I wish I could have been born in Canada, could have watched Crashbox and Mona the Vampire most of the time as a kid, and could have played Sang-Froid: Tales of Werewolves as a teenager/adult, most preferably in New Brunswick, Ontario or Manitoba. --Lo Ximiendo (talk) 05:30, 9 April 2014 (UTC)

Are first edition works preferable? I live in the United States; where do you live? --Lo Ximiendo (talk) 14:57, 11 April 2014 (UTC)
Generally notable editions are given precedence; for example, first editions (first American edition, first London edition, &c.), editions which were considerably different from the first edition (revised editions, &c.), and historically important editions (for instance, if a particular edition was withdrawn... can't think of any examples offhand, but I've heard of it happening). However, if no other scans are readily available, others may also be used. And to answer your second question, I live in India. Best regards,—Clockery Fairfeld [t] 17:49, 11 April 2014 (UTC)

Google Books has a whole version here. Black's Law Dictionary has been the gold standard for legal dictionaries for over a century, and the public domain version would be an invaluable edition to this collection. Cheers! BD2412 T 19:36, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

Hrishikes (talk) 07:13, 19 October 2014 (UTC)

  • I am not sure whether this is meant to indicate that these are available versions with which to do this project, or whether the availability of these versions is an objection to doing this project. By adding the public domain editions to Wikisource, we will be able to cross-reference to definitions in Wiktionary without sending readers outside of Wikimedia space. We will also be able to import definitions already in Wiki-text to Wiktionary. Cheers! BD2412 T 11:55, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
These are versions readily available. (actually, even 9th Ed and 10th Ed are freely downloadable from the net; but these are likely pirated, so I'll refrain from giving the link.) So, there is no hurdle in starting the project. I am doing other things; you may take it up if you so wish. As for PD-ness, the first two eds are pre-1923, but the others need to be checked. Hrishikes (talk) 16:58, 20 October 2014 (UTC)
  • I have no doubt that the more recent versions are under copyright. With respect to the public domain versions, what is the technical process for uploading these from their internet locations to Wikisource? Is it a matter of manual copying and pasting? BD2412 T 01:37, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Ideally, we want to get a full DjVu file, with OCR text layer included. Places like the Internet Archive are a good place to look for a clean copy of this. If the edition is in PD worldwide, then the DjVu is uploaded to Commons, and an Index and pages are created here. If the edition is in PD in the US, but not in PD in the country of publication, then the DjVu is uploaded locally to Wikisource with a template noting that it cannot be moved to Commons until [date]. --EncycloPetey (talk) 02:11, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
I am trying to prepare the 2nd Ed for here. It needs to be downloaded page by page from the link given above; then converted to djvu. So it'll take some time. Hrishikes (talk) 03:23, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
The Google Books link that I provided in my first post has the entire 2nd Ed as a single document. Wouldn't that be easier to download? BD2412 T 03:30, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
Your link does not give download option from my location. If you can upload it to IA, you will get a readymade djvu. Otherwise you may upload it to some cloud storage like Box, Mediafire etc. and give the link here. Hrishikes (talk) 03:43, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
I have uploaded this to the Internet Archive, at https://archive.org/details/BlacksLaw2dEd, and am trying to send it from there to Commons now. Cheers! BD2412 T 12:40, 22 October 2014 (UTC)
Internet Archive has not yet generated a DjVu file of my upload, but I found another version already there, at https://archive.org/details/alawdictionaryc00unkngoog. The upload tool keeps telling me that it can't find this file in Internet Archive, though. BD2412 T 13:23, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Beatrix Potter

This section was archived on a request by: Mukkakukaku (talk) 18:54, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Trying to track down some of Beatrix Potter's less popular works. The following I found on HathiTrust, but I can't get at since I'm not a member (and not currently in the US):

In addition to the above, we're also missing these:

  • The Story of Miss Moppet (1906)
  • The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies (1909)
  • Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes (1917)

At some point Project Gutenberg digitized the majority of Potter's work, but I haven't been able to find their original scans while digging through their archives (on the proofreader's portal, at least.) The problem with PG's work is that now there's a lot of pdfs floating around the internet that are their transcription and not original scans.

Thanks. --Mukkakukaku (talk) 19:47, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

(Also, if the HathiTrust part of this request is in the wrong place, please let me know and I'll move it elsewhere.) --Mukkakukaku (talk) 19:47, 19 September 2016 (UTC)

I may have found a way to get most of these, using DownThemAll Firefox plugin. I'm testing on Peter Rabbit. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 13:53, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
It works, but will take a while. Someone with access can probably do it much faster and more easily. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 16:16, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
Some of these can probably be found in better quality elsewhere. The first Peter Rabbit link on the list is a Google scan that was uploaded to Hathi, and not their usual quality of scan. --EncycloPetey (talk) 15:44, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
I've looked in the usual places for better scans (archive.org and Google Books); surprisingly, better scans are not readily available. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 16:16, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
In addition we've got higher quality copies of the illustrations themselves via Project Gutenberg, so as long as the scans are complete, their overall quality doesn't really matter as much in this regard. --Mukkakukaku (talk) 17:04, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
Most of HathiTrust scans are scans provided by Google to HathiTrust as part of the agreement that let Google scan the HathiTrust libraries. If you can see the pages but can't download the PDF, that's a good sign they came from Google; the few non-Google scans were marked by HathiTrust letting you download the whole PDF.--Prosfilaes (talk) 18:13, 20 September 2016 (UTC)
@Prosfilaes: I have looked for them on Google Books and they are not there except in snippet-view, which is just as useless. (This may be different for American users.) —Beleg Tâl (talk) 14:10, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

I've downloaded all the ones I can do. The rest will need to be accessed by someone with full access. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 14:12, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

NVM, got them with a web proxy —Beleg Tâl (talk) 15:22, 26 September 2016 (UTC)

The Story of Miss Moppet is available on IA via OpenLibrary. In theory. I've added myself to the "waitlist" since it's been "checked out." I'll see about adding it if it ever gets "checked in" again.... --Mukkakukaku (talk) 20:27, 30 September 2016 (UTC)

Same deal with The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies. Mukkakukaku (talk) 20:34, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
And also Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes.... --Mukkakukaku (talk) 20:44, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
Haha, care to guess who's checked them out? (Hint: it's me!) The Flopsy Bunnies and Apply Dapply both unfortunately use modified versions of the illustrations and are still under copyright (©1991 and 1987 respectively). Miss Moppet is okay though. I've checked them back in for you. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 20:47, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
LOL -- great minds, eh? Is the text the same for Flopsy Bunnies and Apply Dappley? If it is, maybe we can do some surgery on the PDFs and blank the pages with the modified illustrations since (I think) we've got the images from Gutenberg? --Mukkakukaku (talk) 20:51, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
I don't think surgery is a good idea. I'm exploring a few options for scanning in a physical copy. Worst case I'll scan in the relevant pages from my omnibus volume. It'll be easier than surgery on scans :p —Beleg Tâl (talk) 21:14, 30 September 2016 (UTC)
