- Blood and Iron - Otto von Bismarck
- Is there a full text of this? I can see some German original text at here (top of col 2, Oct 6, 1862). Inductiveload—talk/contribs 16:50, 12 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Inductiveload Best I can find are this in Fifty major documents of the nineteenth century and this in the Life of Bismarck. Another scan here has a line of the speech and makes reference to a French translation, here, which in turn points to pp. 33–34, vol. 1 ed. 2 (which I could not locate, though it might be helpful for French Wikisource). Apparently, though, no verbatim transcript of the speech exists. Shells-shells (talk) 16:58, 15 March 2022 (UTC)
- @Inductiveload I have zero clue why I didn't mention the German-language transcript of Bismarck's speech listed as a source in Fifty major documents: namely, "Horst, Kohl, ed., Die politischen Reden des Fürsten Bismarcks: historische-kritische Gesammtausgabe (14 vols.; Stuttgart, 1892-1904), II, pp. 29-30." - Jeannette Rankin's sole dissenting vote, and the speech that accompanied it, against US participation in WWII
- Vote at Cong. Rec. v.87, part 9, p. 9536. But I do not see a speech by Rankin (note there are two Rankins) on that date, just some comments/points of order. Presumably the speech was then not made on the House floor that day? Inductiveload—talk/contribs 20:47, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
- @Inductiveload Is there any reason to believe that she gave a speech at all? Here's all I can find: Rankin objected to the declaration of war (p. 9520, col. 2); then, after some sixteen pages of her colleagues' oratory, she attempted to speak but was refused the floor. Two days later (p.
94969646, column 3) w:Clare Hoffman mentioned "that I noticed on the day war was declared that recognition was denied to a Member of the House, the gentlewoman from Montana [Miss Rankin] to express her views." Rankin shows up again on the 15th (p. 9798, col. 3) to object to a bill proposing a death penalty in cases of wartime sabotage, and then seems to disappear from the record. If Rankin did have a speech prepared for the declaration of war, it does not appear in Part 9; nor can I find it in the Appendix. Did she publish it elsewhere? Shells-shells (talk) 05:35, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

Reference works by James Hastings
[edit]I am asking assistance with this because, ignorant idjit that I am, I haven't figured out how to get my damn djvu plug-in to work yet. But if anyone were interested in uploading the w:Encyclopædia of Religion and Ethics, several articles of which are still included in the bibliographies of articles in the best current reference works in the field. Also, his other multi-volume reference works, including "A Dictionary of Christ and the Gospels," of "Dictionary of the Apostolic Church," or his "Dictionary of the New Testament," or "A Dictionary of the Bible," along with (maybe, if anyone really wanted to spend a lot of time on this) his "Greater Men and Women of the Bible" and "Great Texts of the Bible," all of which are I think available at archive.org or elsewhere, I could start work on them. Vital documents in international law
[edit]When I was in law school, my international law professor posted a list of "vital documents" that he felt anyone with an international practice should be familiar with. Most of these Wikisource already has; a few were magazine articles or the like, clearly under copyright and not within the scope of Wikisource. The remaining documents, still apparently missing from Wikisource but (to the best of my knowledge) in the public domain are:

Note that we may have some of these under different names. Also note that the list as a whole reflects one professor's views of what documents are "vital", but I can't see a reason why we wouldn't want to include everything on the list. Cheers! BD2412 T 21:14, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

The Architecture of Open Source Applications
[edit]What about importing The Architecture of Open Source Applications books? There's even a MediaWiki chapter in volume 2, so surely it might be of some interest to our community, and importing it here might help with translation facilities provided in the Wikimedia infrastructure. I suggest to import it in Wikisource, as this is a books with paperback available, but you might argue that it would have it's place on wikibooks. Thank you in advance for your feedback and any help on this subject. --Psychoslave (talk) 09:54, 20 December 2016 (UTC)
User:David Haslam and I have found scans to back most of the 1769 Blayney revision of the KJV, but the books of Lamentations through Malachi are missing from the scans (I assume they are in a 3rd volume yet to be discovered). - AFAIK, a Print on Demand published facsimile of a PD work doesn't introduce a fresh copyright on the content any more than publishing a scanned facsimile on a website. It's merely that fewer people would readily have access to the printed one. For further background reading, see the article about Copyfraud. David Haslam (talk) 10:26, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
- My CrossWire fellow-worker owns the complete set. I myself recently ordered volume 2 at a discount price. David Haslam (talk) 10:29, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
- It looks like those volumes are published from scans at EEBO Editions, ProQuest. Is that right? In that case we'll need someone with access to http://www.proquest.com/products-services/databases/eebo.html to retrieve the digital scans for us to use. Alternatively, re-scanning the printed facsimile, if it's a good enough scan, would also suffice. —Beleg Tâl (talk) 12:43, 20 March 2017 (UTC)
Brown, R., (1810) Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae
[edit]The text is available at BHL and can be downloaded as PDF or OCR, but the OCR needs to be corrected with the aid of the pdf to give (1) a corrected Latin text, requiring (2) an English translation. MargaretRDonald (talk) 23:15, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
- The latin language work would need to undertaken at latin WS. While I can understand the desire for a translation, knowing how well these progress, I cannot see it happening unless it is coordinated and prosecuted. — billinghurst sDrewth 00:19, 11 January 2018 (UTC)
- The file at least is available at Index:Prodromus florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van-Diemen - Brown - 1810.djvu. It's unlikely a 400+ page la-en translation will happen unless someone is very interested in the subject, however. This is Volume 1, but I see no obvious sign of a Vol. 2. Also the paging starts at 145 so unsure what's going on there. Inductiveload—talk/contribs 11:05, 30 September 2020 (UTC)

The Tatler, Nov 30, 1923
[edit]The Mask of Sacrifice, by Margery Lawrence, is an early work of fantastic literature by a woman, and has been reprinted as such. It can be found in The Floating Cafe and Other Stories (1936), but that's going to take a decade to leave copyright. So The Tatler, Nov 30, 1923, is the best source, but HathiTrust doesn't have that issue, nor does IA.--Prosfilaes (talk) 02:55, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
- @Prosfilaes: The British Newspapers Archive has it, but it needs a subscription.
- Side note: since the author died in 1969, it'll be copyright in the UK until 2039, so it's definitely a local-file job.
- Side side note: watch out for the contemporaneous but unrelated "New York" Tatler which appears to be rather more salacious affair around 1920. Inductiveload—talk/contribs 11:19, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

[edit]We have many of the stories of O. Henry, but we lack clear sources for many of them. The author page mentions The Complete Writing Of O. - @RGloucester: That's right, all texts at Wikisource should be, as far as is practical, "scan backed" so that others can check the transcription and verify that it is accurate (aka "validation"). The Wikisource page for this treaty would in fact be a transcribed portion of the book The Truth about China and Japan (and we can have other versions of it if there are alternate sources, for example a government gazette). Proofreads of the book happens in the "page" namespace, and then we transclude it to the mainspace. Inductiveload—talk/contribs 21:18, 7 September 2021 (UTC)

Northanger Abbey's list of Gothics
[edit]From Northanger Abbey: “I will read you their names directly; here they are, in my pocketbook. Castle of Wolfenbach, Clermont, Mysterious Warnings, Necromancer of the Black Forest, Midnight Bell, Orphan of the Rhine, and Horrid Mysteries. Those will last us some time.” “Yes, pretty well; but are they all horrid, are you sure they are all horrid?”
That is:
- Castle of Wolfenbach
- Clermont
- Mysterious Warnings
- Necromancer of the Black Forest
- The Midnight Bell, by Francis Lathom (1798)
- Orphan of the Rhine
- Horrid Mysteries.
(All real books, published not too long before Northanger Abbey's writing.) --Prosfilaes (talk) 16:14, 2 October 2021 (UTC)
- Prosfilaes: I have found the following scans (which are named on Wikipedia here):
- The Castle of Wolfenbach (external scan), by Mrs. [Eliza] Parsons, first published 1793.
- Clermont (first published 1798) (external scan) (two-volume set, 1799 ed.); I could only find the second volume (same on HathiTrust).
- The Necromancer: or the Tale of the Black Forest (external scans (multiple parts): 1, 2) (1794)
- The others are very obscure, and likely are only known through 1960s and more modern reprintings. I have access to those (and could scan them in), but there is some concern regarding reasserting copyright. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 16:13, 14 October 2021 (UTC)

Wikipedia @ 20 (published by MIT Press)
[edit]I am starting to translate individual essays from Wikipedia @ 20 (published by MIT Press) to Croatian and I wonder if it would be good to import the whole book (licence), as well as to advance with translations here on Wikisource? --Zblace (talk) 04:34, 24 December 2021 (UTC)
- OK - things are not moving swiftly here and considering that the compromised and de-admined rightwing Croatian Wikipedia users: Ex13, Roberta F. and SpeedyGonsales are still admins on Croatian Wikisource I will not push for this now. -- Zblace (talk) 08:40, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- FYI the work itself is under a CC-BY 4.0 license. In general it would be good to have the works hosted here as well to a. provide a convenient interwiki link between languages and b. to allow someone to double check the translation easily side-by-side. MarkLSteadman (talk) 23:38, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- @Zblace is there a complete, canonical, PDF of this available? Ideally, we'd have a copy of the original for verifiability purposes. The MIT Press version is split up into lots of separate PDFs (and also claims a CC-BY-NC license, which is incompatible with Wikisource, though the PubPbub version doesn't have the NC bit). Inductiveload—talk/contribs 13:12, 10 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Inductiveload thank you for info! @Reagle @Jackiekoerner do you mind responding to the above as editors?
- --Zblace (talk) 13:08, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Inductiveload is right, the published book is NC, but the PubPub version would be available and I believe it's otherwise identical except that it's missing the pagination information -- I don't know if Wikisource maintains that in any case. One could start by scraping the PubPub version and using Pandoc to convert it to MediaWiki -- unless Wikisource has a different method. -Reagle (talk) 14:31, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
Passenger Pigeon Manifesto
[edit]Dear All,
I would like to ask if you think this text could be included in Wikisource? It has also been published in a peer-reviewed journal but as I'm the author I'm not allowed to upload the text myself. Thank you.
Best, --Adam Harangozó (talk) 16:42, 1 January 2022 (UTC)
- @Adam Harangozó: Hello. That would be a useful contribution and you can add it here yourself: the fact you are its author does not make any difference if the text is notable enough to be placed here, which it is. There are two possibilities, the easier one and the better one :-)The easier one is to add the text simply to Passenger Pigeon Manifesto and to give the source of the text and its licence at its talk page, with the link to the page where the license is given. A disadvantage of this way is that if later the original page with the text and its licence disappeared from the Internet, we would have no proof about the license, which might threaten the existence of the text in Wikisource in the future. For this reason I suggest to download the PDF of the published article, upload it to Commons and at the same time email the Commons:Volunteer Response Team about releasing the text under a free licence. You can use one of Commons:Email templates for the email. After they confirm the licence, you can transcribe it here, either directly, or using the proofread extension. Feel free to ask me any questions or inform me about any problems at my talk page. --Jan Kameníček (talk) 21:11, 1 January 2022 (UTC)

Lithuanian-English Dictionary by Lalis
[edit]Third edition if possible. There are various scans on Google Books and the Internet Archive; the most readable/OCRable of the third edition scans should be the one chosen.
- GBooks option 1 - has a lot of slanted pages (only including for completeness)
- Gbooks option 2 - has less of that
- IA option 1 - seems fine
- IA option 2 - also seems fine
I guess someone with more experience could judge which of these is likely to be most usable; either of the IA ones would be okay. I realize that the second part where the headwords are English words and the glosses are Lithuanian belongs more properly on lt.wikisource (but they don't even use source-backed texts there, which is inconvenient). Even if only the first part with Lithuanian headwords and English glosses is allowed here, that would still be great. 70.172.194.25 21:01, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

- It was reprinted in 1960 by the Liverpool University Press ([14]), but this is probably still under copyright. There's a scan of a similarly-themed work available: An authentic narrative of the extraordinary career of James Allen, the female husband (see also [15]). Does this strike your fancy? Early works by Alfred Tennyson
[edit]I've done a fair amount of work on Tennyson but can't find two of his earliest works on line (I've checked the usual IA/Hathi/BL/Bodleian/CUL, along with various US sites with publicly accessible digital scan content, Worldcat and online books pages). If anyone can access either of the following I'd appreciate a copy.
- Poems, by Two Brothers (1827), Alfred Tennyson and Charles Tennyson, London: printed for W. Simpkin and R. Marshall, Stationers'-hall-court; and J. and J. Jackson, Louth.
- Poems, chiefly Lyrical (1830), by Alfred Tennyson, London: Effingham Wilson, Royal Exchange, Cornhill Chrisguise (talk) 23:00, 5 August 2023. (UTC)
- Chrisguise: For Poems, by Two Brothers, does this work? It’s a later reprint, but it’s a facsimile of the original. As for Poems, chiefly Lyrical, I couldn’t find any copies, so I ordered one through ILL. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 12:58, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

Translations of Homer's Batrachomyomachia (The Battle of the Frogs and Mice)
[edit]I have done, or contributed to, transcriptions of several translations of this work. I plan to do a couple of the early ones but I can't find a scanned copy of:—
- The crowne of all Homers workes Batrachomyomachia or the battaile of frogs and mise. His hymn's - and - epigrams translated according to ye. originall (1624?), by George Chapman, London: Printed by John Bull, his Majesties printer (text is on EEBO-TCP at UMich)
Chrisguise (talk) 23:27, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
- Chrisguise: I was actually interested in this work, and ordered it (and scanned it) a while ago. I’ll upload it soon. (By the way, if there are any other EEBO works of which you want scans, including other Batrachomyomachia translations, they are pretty easy to request.) TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 12:41, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks, I'll bear that in mind. Chrisguise (talk) 12:51, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
- Chrisguise: Here you go: IA. The normal reader doesn’t know what to do with the images, though, so the download page is easier. The individual images (from the reel) are two-page spreads, so some work will need to be done before an index can be created. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 14:19, 6 August 2023 (UTC)

- I have just started to process the files you uploaded (rather later than intended}. Could you check whether what you uploaded is complete, since the file names jump from 1879 to 1981 (i.e. should there be a file 1980?). Thanks Chrisguise (talk) 08:03, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- Chrisguise: Yes, the scan is complete. The scanner I use allows for series of scans of pages, but sometimes those get offset (or they run short). In this case, I think scan file 1980 was a duplicate of scan file 1979. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 18:45, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks for checking. Chrisguise (talk) 19:22, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry to bother again but I have come upon some problems. Although I haven't been able to access a full bibliographic description of the work, I found a description on a couple of auction websites, as pi2 (-pi1) A1-2 [par.]4 A-Z4. Both of these sites, plus a Chapman bibliography on IA, refer to a detailed catalogue of the Pforzheimer collection published in 1940, but I can't find a scanned copy of it.
- By comparing the scans you uploaded (and following the catchwords) I believe the following are actual (or potential) problems.
- Pages 36 and 37 are missing (should be between file 1902 and 1903). This is the case because neither the catchwords nor the signatures (E3, but unmarked) follow.
- Pages 54 & 55 are missing (between files 1910 and 1911). This is the case because neither the catchwords nor the signatures (G4, but unmarked) follow.
- Pages 144 to 147 appear to be missing (i.e. two files between 1954 and 1955). However, the signatures seem to follow (from S4 (unmarked) to T), suggesting this is a page numbering problem.
- Pages 180 to 201 appear to be missing (i.e. ten files between 1970 and 1971). However, the signatures seem to follow (from Y4 (unmarked) to Z), suggesting this is a page numbering problem.
- So far as I can make out, the last page is the verso on 1977; everything thereafter is a duplicate of the epistle at the beginning of the work. The final pages bear the signature 'Aa'. I'm not well versed in signature descriptions, but I don't think this is covered by the one listed above. Chrisguise (talk) 07:48, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- The 1954/1955 is clearly direct and 1970/1971 less clearly (by the page bleed-over in the scans to microfilm). The end-of-work epistle appears to have been an actual duplication in printing, which seems to me a strange oversight. I’ll check the holdings for the 1902/1903 and 1910/1911 skips, though. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 23:20, 10 September 2023 (UTC)
- Chrisguise: I just got the scans in. The 1954/1955 and 1970/1971 skips are indeed illusory, and simply a page numbering issue. The other two page spreads I will upload soon, if you want to get to work on the rest of the index. TE(æ)A,ea. (talk) 15:20, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

Volumes 1, 2 and 4 of Index:Horrid Mysteries Volume 3.djvu (1796)
[edit]I have been (slowly) doing work on Volume 3 of 'Horrid Mysteries', currently part of the 'monthly challenge'. However, it is only one volume of a four volume novel. Despite looking in a few places (BL, Bodelian, CUL, Google, IA, ECCO, etc.) I have not been able to locate scans of the other three volumes. The library stamp in Vol. 3. is from the Taylor Institution library, which is part of the Bodelian, and their catalogue identifies that they hold all four volumes but only v.3 has a scanned version.
The only place I found a full description (signatures, number of pages) of the four volumes is on the New York Public Library website.
The Manchester University Library has a link to a scanned version as part of the Corvey Collection at Nineteen Century Collections online (NCCO), to which I don't have access. Can anyone help?

- I'm not sure how you'd capture the colors very accurately other than a pristine set of color chips from the era, so any reproduction here will only ever be an approximation. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:29, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
- Index:Federal Standard Colors (595).pdf - If someonw ants to start converting the FS95C XYZ data , progress would be rapid:) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 17:21, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
- 595C certainly had a table of CIE values at the rear.. 1955 is likley to have Illuminant A or C colors. So it might be possible to take readings from the scan here and make intelligenet comparisons if you have a color meter. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 07:38, 25 July 2024 (UTC)

EB1926
[edit]Now that 1926 Encyclopædia Britannica (13th ed.) is in PD - would be great if it could be made available on Wikisource as well. The Internet Archive seems to have a decent scan. ネイ (talk) 12:49, 4 September 2024 (UTC)
- Doing an edition of EB is an immense quantity of work, and I don't think it's worth doing every one that enters PD. I'd wait four years for EB1933, as the next after that is '73, which will not be PD for ~43 years, so '33 will be (till then) the "last" edition. — Alien333 ( what I did

Upload Help Request
[edit]I need help in uploading these two books: Claims And Teachings Of Ahmed (1917) and 3000 Precious Gems (1949). Both written by Seth Abdullah Allahdin who passed away in 1962, so his works should be already over the copyright law of India, i.e. 60 years after the demise of the writer. Thank you. Mbee-wiki (talk) 04:40, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- (Wikisource only counts the copyright law of the US, but both Claims And Teachings of Ahmed (as {{PD-US|1962}}, published before 1929) and 3000 Precious Gems (as {{PD-1996}}, didn't find any indication of publication in the US, and 49<96) are hostable.) — Alien333 ( what I did
why I did it wrong ) 08:52, 8 September 2024 (UTC)
- For PD-1996, a work needs to be PD in its home country on the URAA data, usually (and for India) 1/1/1996. IIRA, in 1996, India was life+50, but even then, this work wouldn't be out of copyright until after 1962+50, or 2012. So 3000 Precious Gems is going to be in copyright in the US until 2045.--Prosfilaes (talk) 05:02, 9 September 2024 (UTC)
- Sorry, misunderstood {{PD-1996}}. — Alien 3
3 3 16:46, 9 September 2024 (UTC) - @Prosfilaes, @Alien333, @Mbee-wiki: What's the final conclusion regarding the copyright status of these books? At least the one published in 1917 is public domain in the USA, right? If yes, then can it go to commons? Or should it be uploaded to en.wikisource? Also as the author died less than 70 years ago, does this have any implications on the copyright status of this book, for example, in the EU? --Ssvb (talk) 02:45, 13 September 2024 (UTC)
- Claims and Teachings Of Ahmed is hostable at commons as it's both PD-India and PD-US. 3000 Precious Gems is hostable neither here not there, as PD-US is required by both. (Regarding EU copyright, per w:List of copyright terms of countries#European union, it seems all member states for once got in line and followed the directive, meaning that, yes, they're not PD in europe, but that doesn't really matter, unless you upload thousands of them and you have revealed your real name (c.f. Dcoetzee and the NPG)). — Alien 3

The IA scan of this particular book at https://archive.org/details/donegalfairysto00macmgoog/ had broken illustrations and omitted the title page. So I have downloaded all the original pages from https://hdl.handle.net/2027/hvd.hwlfw7 , converted them to DjVu with watermarks removed, added a text layer via Tesseract and uploaded the result to https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Donegal_Fairy_Stories_(1915).djvu
But the problem is that Wikisource doesn't recognize the DjVu file for some reason. And I had exactly the same problem with Index:The_Headless_Horseman_(1869).djvu earlier (uploaded the 140MB version, Wikisource refused to recognize it, uploaded a reduced 90MB version, Wikisource recognized the reduced version AND also started to recognize the 140MB version as well, albeit with a mismatched text layer). Does anyone know what's going on? --Ssvb (talk) 00:48, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- I may try to upload another revision of "Donegal Fairy Stories" and suspect that the problem will just magically disappear. For "The Headless Horseman" case I initially suspected that exceeding the 100MB limit was to blame, but now I just have no clue. --Ssvb (talk) 01:12, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- Found a solution and now the 0x0 problem is gone: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T299521#9651033
- It was necessary to "purge" the uploaded DjVu file on commons. --Ssvb (talk) 04:34, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
